Downloading Media to Reinstall Windows


If you need to get media to repair or restore your operating system to its original factory image, visit the Media Backup page to get information on creating recovery discs from your Alienware computer or downloading an image online, or see the download process below.

System Eligibility and Download Instructions

To check availability of downloadable media on your system do the following:

  1. Go to http://www.dell.com/support/home/drivers/osiso/recoverytool

  2. Under Identify your Dell PC enter your Service Tag number, then type the verification code displayed

  3. If your system is eligible you may continue to the next step

  4. Click on the Download link next to your version of Windows

  5. Accept the terms and conditions

  6. A small app called Dell System Detect may be installed, click run when prompted to install it

  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the Dell System Detect Setup

  8. A pop-up will ask you the location where you want to save the image file

Important:
  • Download link will expire an hour after you have verified your Service Tag
  • Image can be downloaded as many times as needed
  • You are downloading the original version of Windows installed on your system, if you upgraded to a newer Windows version you will have to upgrade again
  • This image can be downloaded on a non-Dell computer

How to use the ISO image?

The image file (ISO) contains all the files that you would normally find on a disk or thumb drive.

  • Click Here for instructions on how to burn the image file on Windows 7

  • To create a DVD on Windows 8/8.1/10 follow these steps:

    1. Double Click the image file. A new window will open showing all the files

    2. Click Here for instructions on how to burn the files to the DVD

  • To create a USB drive with the media do the following:

    Important:
    • USB drive with a 8Gb minimum capacity is required
    • All Data on the USB drive will be deleted
    1. Format the USB key

    2. Double Click the image file. A new window will open showing all the files

    3. Copy all the contents of the image file onto the USB key
