How do I attach a DSL modem to my Dell computer? - Technical Tip - 134700




Attaching a DSL modem to the computer without a telephone.

  1. Connect a RJ-11 phone line to a wall phone jack and the other end of the cable to the back of the DSL modem.
  2. Connect a RJ-45 crossover cable (provided by your ISP) to the back of the DSL modem, and the other end to the network interface card (NIC) in your computer.
  3. Plug the DSL modem into a power outlet.
  4. Refer to the ISP documentation for operating system configuration instructions.

Attaching a DSL modem to the computer with a telephone.

  1. Insert a 2-jack modular adapter into the wall outlet.
  2. Connect a RJ-11 phone line to one jack of modular adapter and other end to a microfilter (provided by your ISP).
  3. Connect the microfilter to the telephone using another phone cord.
  4. Connect a phone line from the 2nd modular adapter jack to the back of the DSL modem.
  5. Connect a RJ-45 crossover cable to the back of the DSL modem and the other end to the network interface card (NIC) in your computer.
  6. Plug the DSL modem into a power outlet.
  7. Refer to the ISP documentation for operating system configuration instructions.

Broadband connections to the Internet such as DSL require the use of a special modem. This modem is usually an external device that needs to be connected to your computer. Refer to the documentation that your Internet Service Provider (ISP) provided with your modem for connection instructions. If no instructions were provided, this document illustrates generic DSL modem configurations.
