Dell Precision Workstation M6500 CPU/Memory configuration restrictions you need to know for RAM memory upgrades

What are the Random Access Memory (RAM) upgrade configurations for the Mobile Precision Workstation M6500? My M6500 does not recognize more than 8 gigabyte (GB) of RAM on Windows XP x64, Windows Vista x64, or Windows 7 x64.
NOTE: Dell does not provide support to upgrade the processor on portable systems.

The M6500 Mobile Precision Workstation can support up to 32 GB of RAM installed using 4 x 8GB DDR3-1333MHz modules, but there are restrictions. Installations of more than 4GB RAM require a 64 Bit operating system to be able to address RAM addresses above 4GB.
If the system has a dual core processor, the memory max is 8GB (2 x 4GB DDR3-1600 MHx Modules) in slots 1 and 2 (Slot on the bottom of the chassis). Dual Core Processors shipped on the M6500 are:

Intel® Core™ i5-560M Dual Core 2.66GHz 3MB
Intel® Core™ i5-580M Dual Core 2.66GHz 3MB
Intel® Core™ i7-640M Dual Core 2.80GHz 4MB

If the system is configured with a QUAD Core processor, then the memory configurations are as follows:

1600 MHz Memory Speed
8.0GB, DDR3-1600MHz SDRAM, 4 DIMMS
4.0GB, DDR3-1600MHz SDRAM, 2 DIMMS

1333 Mhz Memory Speed
32.0GB, DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM, 4 DIMMS
16.0GB, DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM, 2 DIMMS
16.0GB, DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM, 4 DIMMS
12.0GB, DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM, 4 DIMMS
8.0GB, DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM, 2 DIMMS
8.0GB, DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM, 4 DIMMS
4.0GB, DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM, 2 DIMMS
2.0GB, DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM, 2 DIMMS

Dell shipped Quad Core Processors are:

Intel® Core™ i7-740QM Quad Core 1.73GHz 6MB
Intel® Core™ i7-840QM Quad Core 1.86GHz 8MB
Intel® Core™ i7-940XM Extreme Edition 2.13GHz 8MB

SUMMARY: Make sure you understand the physical limitations of the system before attempting any RAM upgrades. Systems with Dual Core processors are limited to 8GB total RAM installed in slots 1 & 2. Quad Core systems also use memory slots 3 and 4 (Located under the keyboard) and have a maximum of 32GB of RAM.
