Why is Primary Hard Disk Drive Controller (Dual FIFO) displayed under Problem Devices in System Information when I have a Promise ATA-66 Controller Card installed in my system? - Technical Tip - 164229

Hardware is Functioning Properly.

To confirm that the primary hard disk drive controller is listed under Problem Devices, perform the following steps:

  1. Click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and click System Information.
  2. Click the plus (+) sign next to Components to expand the subcategories.
  3. Click Problem Devices.
The primary hard disk drive controller (dual FIFO) should appear with the message there is a problem with the device- it is disabled in the current hardware profile.

The Promise ATA-66 Controller Cards are designed so that the hard drive will completely bypass the motherboard, and is accessed with the controller card instead. Since the primary IDE controller on the motherboard is not in use, Windows reports that the controller has been disabled.

The hardware is functioning properly. This error message is displayed because the primary hard disk drive is connected to the Promise ATA-66 Controller Card instead of the motherboard.
