Copy Problem [ Dell™ 2135cn Printer ]



Determine what type of copy defect is occurring.
  • The printer has blank or faint copying: Determine if the issue is occurring with the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) or Flat Bad.

    • The problem occurs with the ADF:
      1. Verify that the page being placed into the ADF is positioned properly.

      2. Verify the copy contrast settings.
        1. When the printer is Ready (Copy, Scan, Fax appears in the LCD), press the Up or Down arrow button to scroll to Copy, then press the Select button.
        2. Press the Down arrow button to scroll to Lighter/Darker.
        3. Press the Right or Left arrow button to change the setting to Normal, then press the Select button. (Normal will then have an asterisks * next to it.)
        4. Press the Back button to exit.

      3. Verify the copy quality settings.
        1. When the printer is Ready (Copy, Scan, Fax appears in the LCD), press the Up or Down button to scroll to Copy, then press the Select button.
        2. Press the Down arrow button to scroll to Original Type.
        3. Press the Right or Left arrow button to change the setting to the size of the document being copied, then press the Select button. (Text & Photo* is the default setting.)

      4. Print a color test page.
        1. When the printer is Ready (Copy, Scan, Fax appears in the LCD), press the Up or Down arrow button to scroll to SETUP, then press the Select button.
        2. Press the Down arrow button to scroll to Reports, then press the Select button.
        3. Press the Right or Left arrow button until Color Test Page is indicated, then press the Select button to print the page.

      5. Determine if the test page printed fine.
        • The test page is blank or faint: Research for "Print Quality Problem the page is completely blank".
        • The test page printed fine:
          Make a copy of the color test page.
          1. Insert the Color Test Page face down on the scanner bed.
          2. When the printer is Ready (Copy, Scan, Fax appears in the LCD), press the Up or Down arrow button to scroll to Copy, then press the Select button.
          3. Press the Start button to copy the page.
          4. Inspect the paper after the copy is complete. The paper should still be blank.

            • There is a defect on the copy:
              Clean the scanner Bed and the ADF.
              1. Open the scanner cover.
              2. Remove any papers or other items from the bed.
              3. Using a lint-free cloth and a glass cleaner, clean the scanner bed, as well as the ADF platen glass.
                For specific information about how to clean the ADF, please refer to your Online User's Guide.
              4. If the problem still persists, Contact Technical Support.

            • There is no defect on the copy: The printer is working as designed.

    • The problem occurs with the scanner bed:
      1. Verify that the scanned page is face down on the Scanner Bed.

      2. Verify the copy contrast settings.
        1. When the printer is Ready (Copy, Scan, Fax appears in the LCD), press the Up or Down arrow button to scroll to Copy, then press the Select button.
        2. Press the Down arrow button to scroll to Lighter/Darker.
        3. Press the Right or Left arrow button to change the setting to Normal, then press the Select button. (Normal will then have an asterisks * next to it.)
        4. Press the Back button to exit.

      3. Verify the copy quality settings.

        3. Press the Right or Left arrow button until Color Test Page is indicated, then press the Select button to print the page.

      6. Determine if the test page is blank.
        • The test page is blank or faint: Research for "Print Quality Problem the page is completely blank".
        • The test page printed fine:
          Make a copy of the color test page.
          1. Insert the Color Test Page face down on the scanner bed.
          2. When the printer is Ready (Copy, Scan, Fax appears in the LCD), press the Up or Down arrow button to scroll to Copy, then press the Select button.
          3. Press the Start button to copy the page.
          4. Inspect the paper after the copy is complete. The paper should still be blank.

            • There is a defect on the copy:
              Clean the Scanner Bed and the ADF.
              1. Open the scanner cover.
              2. Remove any papers or other items from the bed.
              3. Using a lint-free cloth and a glass cleaner, clean the scanner bed, as well as the ADF platen glass.

              4. If the problem still persists, Contact Technical Support.
            • There is no defect on the copy: The printer is working as designed.

  • There is general problem copying:
    Print a system settings report.

    Using the Operator Panel on the printer:

    1. With the printer turned on, press the Down arrow button until you highlight SETUP, then press the Select button.
    2. Press the Down arrow button to scroll to Reports, then press the Select button.
    3. System Settings should be the first report option indicated. If so, then just press the Select button to print the report. If not, then press the Right or Left arrow button until System Settings is indicated, then press the Select button to print the System Settings report.

      Using the Tool Box:

      1. Open the Tool Box and go to the Printer Settings Report tab.
      2. Choose the Reports option from the list at the left side of the page.
      3. Click the Printer Settings button to print the report.

    4. Determine if the settings report page does show a defect.
      • The test page is blank or faint: Research for "Print Quality Problem the page is completely blank".
      • The test page does not show a defect:
        Determine if the issue is occurring with the ADF or Flat Bed.
        • The problem occurs with the ADF.
          Perform a test copy.
          1. Insert a blank white piece of paper into the automatic document feeder (ADF).
          2. When the printer is Ready (Copy, Scan, Fax appears in the LCD), press the Up or Down arrow button to scroll to Copy, then press the Select button.
          3. Press the Start button to copy the blank page.
          4. Inspect the paper after the copy is complete. The paper should still be blank.
            • There are streaks on the paper:
              Clean the scanner bed and the ADF.
              If the cleaning did not resolve the problem, Contact Technical Support.
            • There are no streaks on the paper:
              Clean the scanner bed and the ADF. The printer is working as designed.

        • The problem occurs with the scanner bed:
          Clean the scanner bed and the ADF.
          Preview a scan using Dell ScanCenter.
          1. Place the self-test page face down on the scanner bed.
          2. Click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Dell, point to Dell Printers, point to your printer, and then click Dell ScanCenter.
          3. Click the Microsoft Paint button.
          4. Click the Scan button.
          5. Determine if the scan preview has a defect.
            • The scan preview has a defect: Contact Technical Support.
            • The scan preview is normal: Contact the third-party software manufacturer for further support.
