Steps to Clear the CMOS of a Sentia 223 or 3200 Mobile System

Before performing any of the procedures in this section, read and follow the safety instructions in Dell Knowledge Base Article: "Precautionary Measures for Personal Safety" Article ID: 339031.

A new battery can explode if it is incorrectly installed. Replace the battery only with the same or equivalent type recommended by Alienware. Properly dispose of used batteries are required as per the local authorities.

The procedure below works on this computer model because of the particular design on the CMOS battery base.

Never invert the polarity of the batteries of any other device unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer.
  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Unplug the AC adapter.
  3. Remove the main battery and the secondary battery (if present).
  4. Flip the computer upside down, remove the 2 screws from the memory and Mini PCI cover, and then remove the cover (Figure 1).

  5. In case of an internal wireless card installed, it is necessary to remove it in order to make the CMOS battery visible.   6. Note the position of the CMOS battery (Figure 2), the positive end (+) is always facing you.

  7. Use the fingers, flip up and remove the CMOS battery. Install it upside down. This is, with the positive end (+) facing the computer.
    The design of the CMOS battery base of this computer ensures that if the battery is in the inverted position, it will not deliver any voltage to the motherboard. Instead, both contacts of the battery base will only touch the positive side of the battery, thus there is no voltage applied to the board. The positive end of the battery behaves as a bridge that allows the CMOS to discharge itself safely just as the Clear CMOS jumper does on a desktop motherboard.
  8. Wait at least 10 seconds.
  9. Remove the battery, and reinstall it in its normal position.
  10. Assemble the computer, install the battery, AC adapter, and turn on the computer again.
  11. A checksum error may occur. Go to the BIOS setup to load the defaults, and then press <F10> to save changes and exit.
