Multiple external display issues when docked using an E-Port or E-Port Plus series docking station with a Latitude E-series system



This article provides information on "Troubleshooting multiple external display issues when with a docked Latitude Eseries portable system using an E-Port or E-Port Plus docking station".


Multiple external display issues on Latitude E-series systems when docked

Dell system users have reported external display issues when docked related to the Latitude E-series portable systems. Symptoms may include:

  • External displays fail to detect during system power on while docked.
  • External displays may flicker.
  • Various screen resolution and graphic profile retention issues.
  • External displays may black out or go to power save mode after extended time.
  • No video on external displays prior to the loading of the operating system.

Solution options

It has been determined that the following steps can be beneficial in resolving these issues:

  1. Flash the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) for the system to the latest revision to add initial display detection stability. You can download the latest BIOS for your system from the Dell Drivers site. Either select your system from the Browse for a product link or enter your system service tag, then select the BIOS tab to download the latest BIOS for your system.
  2. Download and Install the latest graphics drivers for your Latitude E-series system. You can download the latest Video driver for your system from the Dell Drivers site. Either select your system from the Browse for a product link or enter your system service tag, then select the Video tab to download the latest Video driver for your system.
  3. Download and install the Synaptics VMM2320 MST HUB Firmware for your Latitude E-series system. You can download the latest version for your system from the Dell Drivers site. Either select your system from the Browse for a product link or enter your system service tag, then select the Video tab to download the latest version.
    NOTE: Not all Latitude systems have a MST HUB, if none is listed for your model, continue with the next step.
    PLEASE READ THE "Installation Instructions" from the Drivers & Downloads carefully prior to installing the firmware.
  4. Disable DisplayPort 1.2 (DP1.2) Support from the external monitors menu as a workaround for monitors going black.
    • Not every monitor has the ability to disable or support this feature, please consult your monitors users guide for additional information.
  5. No video on external displays prior to the loading of the operating system should only occur if using Secure Boot with Legacy Rom disabled (Windows 8 factory shipped units).
    • A workaround is to enable Legacy Rom for Windows 7 systems and to disable Secure Boot for Windows 8 systems.
  6. If you still encounter issues, run the ePSA diagnostics on your system to see if you may have a hardware issue with your Latitude system. For information on how to run this please refer to our article - Resolve Hardware Issues Using ePSA or PSA Diagnostics and Guide to Error Codes
