Upgrading the firmware on an Apex OutLook EL-80DT KVM Switch. - Technical Tip - 155848

Replace the EEPROM chip

NOTE: For more information on dentifying a Dell KVM switch, please refer to the links in the Additional Items section below in this document.

The following instructions provide a method of upgrading the processor firmware of Apex PC Solutions OutLook Concentrators.

NOTE: This article assumes that you have the firmware upgrade EEPROM chip and are ready to install it.

Tools required:

  • a small Phillips-head screwdriver
  • a chip puller or small, flat-blade screwdriver

CAUTION: Before you perform any of the following steps, read the Precautionary Measures warning for your personal safety and to prevent damage to the computer system from electrostatic discharge.

  1. Perform the snapshot command to save current system settings; press the <Print Screen/SysRq> key.
The OSCAR Selection window appears on the display.
  2. Press the <F2> key.
The Advanced Menu screen appears with the Commands menu highlighted.
  3. Using the <Up Arrow> and <Down Arrow> keys, move the highlight to Snapshot and then press the <Enter> key.
The hardware settings are now saved to memory.
  4. Turn off power to the switch and disconnect the power cord from the switch.
  5. Remove the two Phillips-head screws holding the access coverplate on the bottom of the switch. (Figure 1)

    Figure 1

  6. Carefully remove the firmware EEPROM from its socket using a chip puller or a small flat blade screwdriver by alternately prying from each end.

CAUTION: Do not pry with excessive force or you may damage the circuit board or the chip socket.

  7. Carefully insert the new firmware EEPROM into the socket, ensuring that the orientation notch on the EEPROM chip matches the outline of the socket and drawing on the circuit board. Note the orientation mark on both the chip socket and on the circuit board. (Figure 2)

    Figure 2

  8. Press firmly to ensure that the chip is seated flush in the socket. Visually check that all the pins of the new chip go straight into the chip socket.
  9. Replace the access coverplate.

Precautionary Measures

Before you perform any of the procedures in this document, read the following caution for your personal safety and to prevent damage to the system from electrostatic discharge (ESD).

Before you start to work on the system, perform the following steps in the sequence listed:

  1. Turn off your computer and all devices.
  2. Ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface at the back of the computer before touching anything inside your computer.

While you work, periodically touch an unpainted metal surface on the computer to dissipate any static electricity that might harm internal components.
  3. Disconnect the power cable to your computer, and then press the power button to ground the system board.
  4. Disconnect any devices connected to the computer, including the monitor, from their electrical outlets to reduce the potential for personal injury or shock. Also, disconnect any telephone or telecommunication lines from the computer.

After you remove or replace parts in the system, observe the following notice to prevent damage to the system:

NOTICE: Make sure that all other system cables are connected before connecting the computer to its electrical outlet.
