OMSA version 4.3 or earlier installs DMI which overwrites the registry information regarding DMI that QL-Config depends upon.

The Dell OpenManage Server Agent (OMSA) version 4.3 or earlier will cause the Qlogic Configuration Utility (QL-Config) to fail with the following errors:

DMI Error: Get Number of Adapter failed.

DMI Registration Failed!

If these errors occur, the Qlogic NT Agent will not start and the configuration utility will not function.

NOTE:This only occurs when using Microsoft Windows 2000 with Service Pack (SP) 2. This problem has not been observed with SP1. QL-Config 1.36 is required when using Windows 2000 SP2. For more information, click here. This only occurs when QL-Config is installed and then the OMSA is installed afterwards. If the OMSA is installed first, followed by the QL-Config, then the DMI portion of the OMSA is overwriten and QL-Config will work properly.

QL-Config is a required software component on any server attached to fibre channel external storage such as the PowerVault™ 650F or PowerVault 660F. It is essential that it be in working order. QL-Config depends on Intel® DMI to function properly. During installation, it installs DMI. OMSA version 4.3 or earlier also installs DMI, which overwrites the registry information regarding DMI that QL-Config depends upon. Extensive testing has revealed this DMI conflict between OMSA and QL-Config makes them incompatible in the same system. If OMSA is installed after QL-Config, a compatibility issue arises which results in a failure to register DMI. If QL-Config is installed after OMSA and the DMI is overwritten, any DMI instrumentation installed by OMSA will fail to start. The two applications cannot co-exist on any system running Windows 2000 SP2.

Newer versions of the OMSA (4.4 and greater) no longer use DMI in their management functions. The newer versions of the OMSA and QL-Config can coexist in a system. The new Dell OpenManage Server Administrator intergrates the newest version of the OMSA as well as other Dell OpenManage applications (such as ArrayManger and Online Diagnostics).
