PCMCIA Overview

PCMCIA is an acronym for Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, and is responsible for credit card-sized devices known as PC Cards. PC Cards are designed for various uses such as memory cards, modem cards, network cards, and hard drives

  • Type I cards are up to 3.3 mm thick. These cards are used primarily for adding additional ROM or RAM.
  • Type II cards are up to 5.5 mm thick. These are often used for modem, fax modem, and network cards.
  • Type III cards are up to 10.5 mm thick, which is large enough for portable disk drives.

PCMCIA slots, as with the PC Cards, also come in three sizes:

  • A Type I slot will hold a Type I card
  • A Type II slot will hold a Type II card or two Type I cards
  • A Type III slot will hold a Type III card or a Type I and a Type II card.
