How to get the Latest Driver/Firmware Updates for your Dell?

This article is intended to assist users with identifying newer updated drivers for their Dell computer.


Determine the Driver Version in the Device Manager

Determine the Operating system you need instructions for to access the device manager.

Please allow several moments for this article to identify your operating system.

If you are on another computer and need to know what Operating System is installed on the computer you are trying to set-up a wireless network, press and hold the Windows Logo key then press the pause or break key (on notebooks it may necessary to press and hold the FN key before pressing the pause or break key). The System Properties window will open and the Operating System is listed.

Windows XP

  1. Click the Start button
  2. Click Settings and then Control Panel
  3. In the Control Panel window, click System
  4. In the System properties window, click on Hardware Tab
  5. Click the Device Manager button
  6. Click the plus symbol next to the device type for the driver you wish to check.
  7. Double-click the specific device that you wish to check. Click the Driver tab and check the Driver Version: that is currently listed.

Windows Vista/7

  1. Click the Start button
  2. Select Control Panel
  3. Click Hardware and Sound in the Control Panel window.
  4. If your Control Panel is using the Classic View, click System.
  5. Click Device Manager.
    The User Account Control window may appear, if so, click Continue.
  6. Click the + sign next to the device type for the driver you want to check.
  7. Double-click the specific device that you want to check.
  8. In the Properties window for that device, click the Driver tab and check the Driver Version: that is currently listed.

Windows 8

  • Open Control Panel by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping Search ( or if you are using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking Search), entering Control Panel in the search box, and then tapping or clicking Control Panel.
  • Select Device Manager from the list.
  • In the Device Manager window, click on the device type you want to check.
  • Double-click the specific device that you want to check.
  • In the Properties window for that device, click the Driver tab and check the Driver Version: that is currently listed.

Determine if a Newer Driver Version Is Available

  1. Browse to the Drivers and Downloads page.
  2. Under the Yes subheading enter your Service Tag to get a concise list of drivers for your specific product model.
    Click Submit to continue.
    If the Service Tag is not available, under the No subheading select from the following options:
    Click the Automatically detect my Service Tag for me button and click Continue . This option will only work if you are using the Internet Explorer browser.
    Or Click the Choose from a list of all Dell products button and click Continue . Next Select your product type, then product line, and finally your computers model.
  3. If you are using Download Manager, click here for download and installation instructions.
    If you are wanting to install a printer driver,click here.
  4. Under Refine your results you can optionally select your desired operating system, and category settings from the drop-down boxes.
  5. Select the driver you want to download from categories listed on the download page. See Section 5 to understand what's listed in each category.
    Click the Drop Down menu to see which drivers are available for download in each category.
  6. Review the information on the page and take note of Installation Instructions and Important Information.
    If you are using Download Manager to download files,click here.
  7. Click Download. You may receive a warning and an option to run or save the file.
    If you want to download multiple drivers, you can click Add To Download List. Once you have added all the drivers you want to download click Download.
  8. Click Save. .
  9. When the Save As window appears, designate a folder to save the file that is being downloaded and click Save. . The download progress window displays.
  10. Make sure the checkbox next to Close this dialog box when download completes is unchecked.
  11. When the download completes click Run or Allow.
    The User Account Control window may appear, click Continue
  12. A small window will appear with Continue and Exit buttons, click Continue. .
  13. In the Select the folder where you want to unzip the files to window, click Ok. .
  14. If a message appears asking to create a folder, click Yes. . If a message appears asking to overwrite the folder, click Yes to All. .
  15. In the All files were successfully unzipped window, click Ok.
  16. A new window will appear, follow the prompts that appear to finish the installation.
