Home Networking Kits May Not Work With @Home Cable Modems. - Technical Tip - 134258

Once the computer name and workgroup name have been set, do not change either name.

If you have Broadband service provided by @Home, you might not be able to use home networking kits and Internet software sharing kits that may be bundled or sold by Dell.

To use an @Home cable modem, you must have a computer name and workgroup name. These names are either provided to you by the @Home service or you are asked to provide them. Once these names have been set, either by the @Home service or by you, they must not be changed. If they are changed, the DHCP server located in the @Home office may not verify the connection. If the connection cannot be verified, an IP address will not be assigned to your account and you will not be able to connect to the Internet.

The home networking kits affected by this are: Aironet\Cisco Consumer, Lucent Consumer, and 3Com® Home Click PCI HPNA. The two Internet sharing software kits affected by this issue are: Microsoft® Windows® 98 Second Edition and Sygate.

Once the computer name and workgroup name have been set, do not change either name.

If you want more than one IP address, contact your @Home service provider.

If you want more than one IP address, contact your @Home service provider. @Home provides support for up to 3 IP addresses. Using a hub to connect multiple computers eliminates the need for additional Internet sharing software. For  information on how to configure the network for multiple IP addresses, access the @Home user guide at http://www.cox.com/service/coxathome.
