How to configure DHCP failover in Windows Server 2012 and above

This article provides information on configuring DHCP failover which is a new feature in Windows Server 2012 that provides redundancy for DHCP

For general information on DHCP failover, including the requirements that must be met before deployment, see Information about DHCP Failover in Windows Server 2012 and Above.

Before failover can be configured, at least one scope must be created on one (and only one) of the two servers that will be participating in the failover relationship. Once that has been accomplished, perform the following steps to create a failover relationship:

  1. Open the DHCP console on one of the servers that will be participating in the failover relationship.
  2. Right-click an IPv4 scope that will be configured for failover and select Configure Failover.
  3. Select the scopes that will be involved in the failover relationship or check the Select all box to select all of them. Click Next to continue.

  4. Select the server to be the partner in the failover relationship. You can select the server from the dropdown list, if it appears, or type its name or IP address into the field. Alternatively, click Add Server and select it from the list. Click Next to continue.

  5. The next screen is where most of the failover relationship settings are configured. These settings are determined in part by the type of failover relationship being created, and for the sake of brevity and clarity, they are documented in a separate article: Configuration Settings for DHCP Failover Relationships in Windows Server 2012 and Above. Please refer to that article for detailed information. After choosing the desired settings, click Next to continue.

  6. Review the summary screen and click Finish to create the failover relationship.

  7. The next screen will display the steps involved in creating the relationship, and it should indicate that everything was performed successfully. Click Close to close it.

8. DHCP failover is now operational. After failover has been enabled for a scope, the scope's properties window will include a Failover tab which displays the properties of the applicable failover relationship:
