Symptoms

Summary: Ubuntu 16.04 operating system support for the Dell Dock (WD15) & the Dell Thunderbolt Dock (TB16) is limited to the Precision Mobile 5520 with feature limitations. Ubuntu 16.04 operating system support for the Dell Precision Dual USB-C Thunderbolt Dock: TB18DC is limited to the Precision 7530 and 7730 Mobile Workstations with feature limitations.

Ubuntu 16.04 support.

Ubuntu 16.04 operating system support for the Dell Dock (WD15) & the Dell Thunderbolt Dock (TB16) is limited to the Precision Mobile 5520 with feature limitations for functionality restrictions as noted in the table below. Ubuntu 16.04 operating system support for the Dell Precision Dual USB-C Thunderbolt Dock: TB18DC is limited to the Precision 7530 and 7730 Mobile Workstations with feature limitations as noted in the table below.

Ubuntu Dock limitations and Workarounds.

Issue Workaround
The monitor audio may be lost when the connected using a WD15/TB16/TB18DC dock Use the system internal audio instead of monitor audio. The issue is targeted to be resolved in late May 2017.
System fails to resume from hibernate (S4) when connected to a WD15/TB16/TB18DC dock this is the OS limitation on Dell Ubuntu 16.04.
Unable to upgrade the dock firmware under Ubuntu environment (WD15/TB16/TB18DC dock) This is the OS limitation. Upgrade the Dock firmware connected to another system under the Windows operating system environment.
The TB16/TB18DC Dock does not function Change the system security level to "No Security" if the setting is allowed in in your corporate security policy. In the BIOS, select Setting > System Configuration > Thunderbolt Adapter Configuration > Security level - No Security and then apply the change and restart the system.
Unable to support a peer-to-peer network connection through TB16/TB18DC dock with Thunderbolt cables There is no workaround for this limitation
