A System Backup is an incremental backup of all data, application, system settings and operating system files on the C: drive. System Backups should be performed regularly to maintain good system security. Each System Backup records only the changes from the previously made system backup.
A File and Folder Backup is a backup of files and/or folders specifically selected for backup. When creating a file and folder backup, you may select categories of files such as "Photos", "Videos", "Documents", etc to back up or you may select specific folders on the computer to backup. File and Folder Backup selections are stored in profiles which may be scheduled or run manually.
Dell DataSafe Local provides you with the capability to create a set of Recovery Discs that contain a complete copy of all software installed on your Dell computer. By creating these Recovery Discs, you are making a backup of all the software that was installed on your computer at the factory, which allows you to reinstall all applications, drivers and the Windows operating system shipped with your computer. While there is a similar copy of the software in the recovery partition, creating recovery discs provides additional protection for the factory installed software.
Dell DataSafe Local provides the latest recovery technology to Dell consumer by shipping a recovery partition containing a copy of all the factory installed software. This protected partition will boot even when Windows does not run and with Dell's factory recovery software will allow you to reinstall all of the software that came with your Dell computer.
Backup profiles save the scheduling information and the configuration information for a File and Folder Backup. This includes the type of backup to be made, the types of files to be backed up and the destination of the backup.
System Backups can be managed through the "Settings" screens which provide the following management options:
By default, System Backups may consume up to 25% of the C: drive. This allocation may be modified through the "Settings" menu, but the allocation may never exceed 30% of the drive.
Recovery discs should be single layer or dual layer DVDs.
System Backups may be stored on any connected hard disk (internal HDD, USB, or Firewire hard drive, etc).
File and Folder Backups may be store on any connected hard disk as System Backups and may be burned to CD/DVD.
System Backups are incremental backups, meaning that the latest System Backup is a record of only the files that have changed since the last backup and the current state. Each System Backup is dependent on all the previous System Backups when recovering the computer.To recover the computer properly, you cannot delete a System Backup in the middle of the chain, so the software forces you to delete any System Backups created after the selected System Backup.
System Backups can be moved to another storage location if you desire. Simply open Dell DataSafe and edit the backup profile for your System Backups. When you select the location, select the new location where you would like all System Backups to be created. The application will automatically move all your System Backups to this new location.
From the Dell DataSafe Local main menu, select "Recover My Files". On the subsequent screen select "Restore individual files from a System Backup". You will be prompted to select the System Backup and the file(s).

Under Advanced options, you may select to go directly to Emergency File and Folder Backup to backup your files before recovery or select a System Backup other than the most recent to perform a system recovery.
Recovering your computer to an archived System Backup is possible either through Windows or through the recovery environment. From Windows:Choose any System Backup from the list provided under the Recover Your Computer option. After the computer reboots in the recovery environment select cancel at the main screen to choose other system backup options. A button marked "Use Archived System Backups" will appear.
From F8When rebooting the computer to access recovery from the F8 boot menus, you can select Dell DataSafe Local Recovery. From the main
screen you may select "Use Archived System Backups" to access your Archived System Backups. In either case, follow the on-screen instructions to select the backup and begin the recovery process.
Provided that they c: drive is accessible, you may always backup your personal data before performing a recovery. The Emergency File and Folder Backup utility is offered before any recovery takes place and is available separately under "Advanced Options". If the c: drive is inaccessible, then the recovery environment will not be able to backup any files.
Recovery discs provide the additional option of recovering the entire computer to the factory condition. This will remove all files and folders from the computer and lay down the software and drives exactly as at the factory, including reinstalling the recovery partition.
Dell DataSafe Local handles all errors with dialogs and options provided to the end-user with direction on how to manage the error.
