How to create or modify a partition in Microsoft Windows


This article describes how to create or modify a partition or logical volume on a hard disk using Microsoft Windows tools.

Caution:
Modifying or deleting partitions may result in loss of data. Ensure that all data is properly backed up prior to attempting any modification of hard disk volumes.
Dell recommends not modifying the following partitions on Disk 0 in Windows Vista or Windows 7 Disk Management:
  • ~34MB partition for Dell Diagnostics
  • ~15GB partition titled RECOVERY

Disk Partitioning in Windows 8

To manage partitions in Windows 8, follow these steps:

  1. Press the <Windows + R> keys to open a Run dialog window, type diskmgmt.msc, then press OK.
    The Disk Management window appears.
  2. Right-click the volume that you would like to repartition and select Shrink Volume...
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to partition the drive.
