  1. Check your boot settings
    1. Turn off the system
    2. Tap the F2 Key while turning on the system
    3. The Setup Utility screen will come up
    4. Hard drive models should show up next to Fixed HDD and Second HDD (If second hard drive is installed)
    5. Use the arrow keys to move to the Boot tab
    6. The following settings should be selected:
      • Windows 8/8.1
        • Secure Boot: [Disabled]
        • Legacy Option ROMs: [Disabled]
        • Boot List Option: [UEFI]
  2. Run a Hard Drive diagnostic using ePSA
    1. Restart the computer
    2. As the computer starts, press F12 when the Alienware Logo Screen appears
    3. At the Boot menu, press the Down Arrow Key highlight Diagnostics and press Enter
    4. A screen displaying all the components of the computer will appear and the diagnostics will begin automatically
    5. To test the Hard Drive only, press Esc and selected the hard drive from the list on the left
  3. Try to Access Safe Mode

  4. If you can access Safe Mode, perform a clean boot

  5. Restore your factory software using Alien Respawn. Click Here for help on how to do this

  7. Make sure the Hard Drive is properly connected

  1. Run the LCD Buit-In Self Test (LCD BIST)

    1. Disconnect all peripherals from your system
    2. Turn Off your system
    3. Hold the D Key as you turn on the system
    4. The system will turn on display colors cycling through Red, Green, Blue, White and Black

      The LCD BIST will run a few times and then will shut down the system, if the system does not shut down press and hold the power button to turn off your system

  2. Try an external monitor

  3. Run an On-line diagnostic

    1. Go to the Alienware 17 R2 Diagnostics Page
    2. Click Advanced
    3. Click Hardware
    4. Scroll down and choose Video card stress from the list
    5. Click Run Diagnostic

      If the lines or distortion appear at some point during this test please contact tech support.

Backup Media Request (US and Canada only)

If your Dell device is under warranty, you can request a set of backup and recovery discs containing the factory-installed operating system as well as your device’s drivers and utilities.

  2. Unplug the Graphics Amplifier
  3. Turn on the system
  4. Download and install the video driver

  7. Connect the Graphics Amplifier
  8. Connect a screen to the Graphics Amplifier (Optional)
  9. Turn on the system, the setup will automatically install the video card for the Graphics Amplifier. *
* If you have installed an AMD card in the Graphics Amplifier you need to install the AMD Alienware Graphics Amplifier Driver

Important: Press the retention clips when connecting and disconnecting the Graphics Amplifier

  • Connect the system directly to a wall outlet (Remove power strips or BackUPS)
  • Disconnect AC Adapter from the system
  • Check the light on the AC Adapter
  • Disconnect the battery
  • Hold the power button for 30 seconds
  • Plug the AC Adapter (Leave the battery unplugged)
  • Try to turn on the system
  • Connect the battery
  • Contact Tech Support if the problem continues

To access the battery cable you need to remove the bottom cover of the system

Video Troubleshooting No Power Issues (English Only)

Systems turns on but shows no image

  1. Turn the system off
  2. Disconnect all accessories from the system. Leave only the notebook with the AC Adapter plugged in.
  3. Press Caps Lock repeatedly
    • If the Caps Lock LED turns on and off try to connect a external display to the system and restart it.
  4. Turn off the system
  5. Press and Hold the D key while turing the system on
    • The screen should go through a cycle of Red, Green, Blue, White and then Off
    • Once done, the system will shut down. If it does not shut down, shut it down manually after the cycle continues

Systems turns on and beeps repeatedly

1 System Board, BIOS corruption or ROM error (Contact Alienware))
2 No RAM detected*. (Reseat Memory modules or test individually)
3 System Board Chipset Failure (Contact Alienware)

  1. Confirm that other devices can connect to the same network
  2. If possible test the computer on a different wireless connection
  3. Uninstall the wireless card from Program and Features at Windows Control Panel

  3. Go to the Health Tab and confirm that there are no errors
  4. Run the ePSA Built-In Diagnostis. Click Here for help on how to do this
  5. Download and Install the latest BIOS for your system
  6. Run a full system diagnostic on your system
    • Go to the Dell On-line Diagnostics site
    • Click on the Advanced tab
    • Select Complete from the options to the left
    • Click Run Diagnostic
  7. Run a Full Virus Scan
    • If your warranty includes software support our support staff can assist you through this process

    2. Click on Advanced
    3. Click on Software
    4. Scroll down and select Bluscreen analyzer from the list

If your games are running slow or you are experiencing poor performance during video intensive aplications try the following steps:

  1. Download and Install the latest BIOS for your system
  2. Connect the AC Adapter to the sytem (Video performance is lower when operating in battery mode)
  3. Left click on the battery charge icon
  4. Select High performance
  5. Right click on the desktop
  6. Click NVIDIA Control Panel
  7. Click Manage 3D Settings
  8. Under Preferred Graphics Processor select High-performance NVIDIA processor
  9. Download and install the latest driver from NVIDIA Drivers Page
  10. Go to the Alienware 15 Diagnostics Page
  11. Click Advanced
  12. Click Hardware
  13. Scroll down and choose Video card stress from the list
  14. Click Run Diagnostic

To resolve general audio issues perform the following steps:

Important: The Alienware 14 supports analog 5.1 surround sound.

  • Check your audio configuration
    • Righ click on the Alienware Audio icon at the system tray
    • Click on Sound Manager
    • Under the Main tab make sure the volume is up and the Mute checkboxes are unchecked
    • Click on the icon to play an audio sample
    • Go to the Speaker / Headphone tab and select the right type of speakers (Stereo should be default if no speakers or headphones are attached)
  • Try different outputs

    1 Microphone, Line in or Rear Speakers Combo Jack 2 Headphones, Center Speaker or Subwoofer
    3 Headset or Front Speakers

  • Download and install the latest BIOS for your system
  • Remove and reinstall the audio driver. Download the driver from the Alienware 14 Drivers Page
  • Run an audio diagnostic on-line
    • Go to the Online Diagnostics page
    • Click on Advanced
    • Click on Hardware
    • Scroll down and select Sound Card from the list
    • Click Run Diagnostic

  • Connect the system directly to a wall outlet (Remove power strips or BackUPS)
  • Disconnect AC Adapter from the system
  • Check the light on the AC Adapter
  • Disconnect the battery
  • Hold the power button for 30 seconds
  • Plug the AC Adapter (Leave the battery unplugged)
  • Try to turn on the system
  • Connect the battery
  • Contact Tech Support if the problem continues

Important: Batteries carry only a one year warrranty. If you have warranty on your system for 2, 3 or 4 years your battery will only be covered within the first year.

  1. Disconnect the AC Adapter
  2. Use your system on battery until the power is completely drained and you can't turn it back on
  3. Plug the AC Adapter back
  4. Keep your system off and charge it for 3 hours
  5. Turn on your system and Press FN + F2 until the System indicates that battery is enabled.
    Important: It may take up to 10 minutes for the Windows System Tray Battery utility to indicate that the battery is actually being charged. Please wait at least 10 minutes to determine if this issue is resolved. If after 10 minutes the battery has not started to charge, restart the system and repeat the steps above.
  6. Browse to the Dell Support Website and upgrade to the newest version of the BIOS and OSD, which guarantees optimal performance with the battery.
  7. Run an On-line Diagnostic
    1. Go to the Alienware 17 Diagnostics Page
    2. Click Advanced
    3. Click Hardware
    4. Scroll down and choose Battery from the list
    5. Click Run Diagnostic

If the test indicates that your battery needs to be replaced and your system is less than one year old please contact tech support.

  1. Run the LCD Buit-In Self Test (LCD BIST)

    1. Disconnect all peripherals from your system
    2. Turn Off your system
    3. Hold the D Key as you turn on the system
    4. The system will turn on display colors cycling through Red, Green, Blue, White and Black

      The LCD BIST will run a few times and then will shut down the system, if the system does not shut down press and hold the power button to turn off your system

    2. Click Advanced
    3. Click Hardware
    4. Scroll down and choose Video card stress from the list
    5. Click Run Diagnostic

To resolve general audio issues perform the following steps:

Important: The Alienware 14 supports analog 5.1 surround sound.

  • Check your audio configuration
    • Righ click on the Alienware Audio icon at the system tray
    • Click on Sound Manager
    • Under the Main tab make sure the volume is up and the Mute checkboxes are unchecked
    • Click on the icon to play an audio sample
    • Go to the Speaker / Headphone tab and select the right type of speakers (Stereo should be default if no speakers or headphones are attached)
  • Try different outputs

    1 Rear Left/Right Speakers 2 Center Speaker
    3 Line-in 4 Front Left/Right Speakers
    5 Microphone port 6 Side Left/Right Speakers

  • Download and install the latest BIOS for your system
  • Remove and reinstall the audio driver. Download the driver from the Alienware X51 R2 Drivers Page or the Alienware X51 R1 Drivers Page
  • Run an audio diagnostic on-line
    • Go to the Online Diagnostics page
    • Click on Advanced
    • Click on Hardware
    • Scroll down and select Sound Card from the list
    • Click Run Diagnostic

  1. Turn the system off
  2. Disconnect all accessories from the system.
  3. Disconnect the AC Adapter

  4. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds

  6. Press Caps Lock repeatedly, if the caps lock turns on and off system is responding properly and issue may be related to your screen or video card.

Systems turns on but shows no image

If all of the above fails please contact tech support

  1. Turn the system off
  2. Disconnect all accessories from the system.
  3. Disconnect the AC Adapter
  4. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds
  5. Turn On the system

If your Dell device is under warranty, you can request a set of backup and recovery discs containing the factory-installed operating system as well as your device’s drivers and utilities.

  • Connect the system directly to a wall outlet (Remove power strips or BackUPS)
  • Disconnect AC Adapter from the system
  • Check the light on the AC Adapter
  • Hold the power button for 30 seconds
  • Plug the AC Adapter
  • Try to turn on the system
  • Contact Tech Support if the problem continues

    5. To test the Hard Drive only, press Esc and selected the hard drive from the list on the left
  3. Try to Access Safe Mode

  4. If you can access Safe Mode, perform a clean boot

Alienware ALPHA Drivers

Important: You will need a mouse and keyboard to perform the following steps on you Alienware ALPHA
  1. Check your boot settings
    1. Turn off the system
    2. Tap the F2 Key while turning on the system
    3. The Setup Utility screen will come up
    4. Hard drive models should show up next to Fixed HDD
    5. Use the arrow keys to move to the Boot tab
    6. The following settings should be selected:
      • Windows 8/8.1
        • Secure Boot: [Disabled]

  2. Run a Hard Drive diagnostic using ePSA

Important: You will need a mouse and keyboard to perform the following steps on your Alienware ALPHA
  1. Uninstall the ALPHA UI

    1. Turn on your system and get into Windows
    2. Right Click on the lower left hand corner of the screen
    3. Click Programs and Features
    4. Look for ALPHA UI on the list and select it
    5. Click Uninstall
    6. Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall the ALPHA UI

  2. Download the ALPHA UI from the

  3. Install the ALPHA UI
