How to fix wireless connection issues caused by McAfee software updates (December 2014)

A recent McAfee software update (December 2014) may cause your computer to lose internet connectivity. You may see error messages in your web browser, or a notification in Windows stating there is an issue with your network connection.
If you are unable to access the internet, follow the steps below to restore the connection.

Connect to the internet in Safe Mode with Networking

The Advanced Boot Options menu lets you start Windows in troubleshooting modes. Options such as Safe Mode with Networking start Windows in a limited state where only the bare essentials are started. If a recurring issue does not appear when you start in safe mode, you can rule out the default settings and basic device drivers as possible causes for the issue.

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. As soon as your computer starts up, press the F8 key several times until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears. To determine which key on your specific Dell computer will access the Advanced Boot Options menu, go to the Dell Manuals web page and select your computer model to download the manual.
If your computer starts up normally, restart your computer after the Windows logon prompt appears and try again.
  3. On the Advanced Boot Options menu, press the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode with Networking, and then press Enter.
  4. After your computer starts in Safe Mode, open your web browser and try to access the internet. If you are able to access the internet, run McAfee Fixes.

Run McAfee fixes or McAfee Virtual Technician

If you are still experiencing issues connecting to the internet with McAfee software, try running McAfee fixes or McAfee Virtual Technician.

If you cannot access the internet from your main computer, please use another computer to download the McAfee Standalone Tool and Virtual Technician to a USB drive and transfer them to your main computer.

McAfee Virtual Technician

  1. If you do not have McAfee Virtual Technician (MVT) already installed on your desktop, go to the McAfee Technical Support For Home and Office web page and download the MVT to your desktop.
  2. On the McAfee Technical Support For Home and Office web page, click Start.
  3. Click Next. The File Download — Security Warning dialogue box will appear.
  4. Click Run and follow the prompts in the installation wizard.
The Run option is not available when using Mozilla Firefox. Windows 7 and Windows Vista users may be prompted to allow the application to run. If prompted, click Yes in the User Account Control box.
  5. Click I Agree to accept the license agreement and begin the installation.
  6. When the MVT installation completes, select or deselect the following options as required, then click Finish.
    • Select schedule scan and remediation: Select this option to schedule the MVT scan and remediation. You can also schedule frequency, time in hours, and the meridian from the respective drop-down menus.
    • Create desktop shortcut: Select this option to create the MVT shortcut on your desktop after installation.
    • Launch McAfee Virtual Technician: Select this option to launch MVT immediately after it is installed.
  7. After installing MVT, click Start on the McAfee service portal page and the Initializing Virtual Technician page appears. Next, the Updating Virtual Technician page appears followed by the Running Virtual Technician page.
  8. After MVT completes checking your computer, the Results page appears. If MVT detects issues with your McAfee software, leave the default option as AutoFix and click Next. If there are no issues, it will complete on its own.
  9. When the AutoFix completes, restart your computer normally and try to access the internet.
