Connect to a Bluetooth Device From Your Dell Computer in Windows XP

This article is intended to walk you through pairing a Dell Bluetooth® enabled computer to a external Bluetooth device in addition to providing basic troubleshooting assistance.


Issue 1: Pair to a Bluetooth Device (new and re-pair)

  1. Locate the Bluetooth icon in the lower-right corner of the computer screen, and compare the status to Table 1.
    (The Bluetooth icon may be hidden, click the Show hidden icons arrow to show any hidden icons.)


    Bluetooth Icon Status
    Enabled - The Bluetooth adapter is ready to pair with another Bluetooth device.

    Connected - The Bluetooth adapter is already connected to a Bluetooth device (if the desired device is not the one its connected to, it will have to be re-paired).
    Disabled - The wireless switch is off. For information on how to turn the wireless switch on refer to the
    Online User's Guide.
    None When no icon shows the Bluetooth driver needs to be installed, refer to Dell Knowledge Base Article:

A 350 Bluetooth adapter is installed in the computer




  1. Make sure the following conditions have been met:
    • Fresh batteries are installed in the other Bluetooth device.
    • The Dell Wireless Bluetooth adapter is installed in the computer.
    • The latest driver for the Bluetooth adapter is installed, if unsure refer to Dell Knowledge Base Article:
      "How to Download and Install the Latest Dell Wireless Bluetooth Driver"
    • The Bluetooth device you are going to pair is within 30 feet (10 meters) of the computer.



  2. Right-click the Bluetooth icon located in the lower-right corner of the computer screen.



  3. Click Add New Connection.
    When Bluetooth devices have already been paired, the Bluetooth Settings window appears. When the device you want to connect with is listed but not connected make sure it is within radio range and turned on and then attempt the connection again.



  4. Select Express Mode.



  5. Put the Bluetooth device in discovery mode. Discovery mode allows the device to be found by your computer and is usually, but not always indicated by a blinking blue LED on the device (refer to your Bluetooth device owner's manual for additional instructions).

    For a Dell branded Bluetooth device, click below to learn how to put it in discovery mode. Then proceed to step 6.
    Put the Dell Bluetooth Keyboard in Discovery Mode
    1. Starting with the Bluetooth device off, press the power switch located on on the bottom of the keyboard.
    2. Find and press the button located underneath the keyboard on the upper-left side.
      The Bluetooth LED on the top of the keyboard blinks when it is in discovery mode and is off when the keyboard is not in discovery mode.


    Put the Dell Bluetooth Mouse in Discovery mode
    1. Starting with the Bluetooth device off, press the power switch located on on the bottom of the mouse.
    2. Find and press the button located on the bottom of the mouse in the upper-right corner.
      The Bluetooth LED on the top of the mouse blinks when in discovery mode and is off when not in discovery mode.


    Put the Dell Travel Mouse in Discovery mode
    1. Starting with the Bluetooth device off, press the power switch located on on the bottom of the mouse.
    2. Find and press the connect button located underneath the keyboard on the upper-left side.
      The Bluetooth LED on the top of the mouse blinks when it is in discovery mode and is off when not in discovery mode.


    Put the BH200 Bluetooth Stereo Headset in Discovery Mode
    1. Starting with the Bluetooth device off, press the power switch located on on the headset.
    2. Press and hold the play/pause center button on the right ear piece until the blue LED starts blinking. This usually takes about 8 seconds.



  6. Click Next to start searching.



  7. Highlight the device you want to pair with, click Next.
    • The Bluetooth Manager - Bluetooth Security window may appear on the computer. When it does input the Bluetooth Passkey found in the documentation that came with the device, then click OK.
    • The same process may be needed to be done on the Bluetooth device.
    • Depending on the device, additional information may be required, if so click Next. Input the additional information, then click Finish.

A 355 Bluetooth adapter is installed in the computer

  1. Make sure the following conditions have been met:
    • Fresh batteries are installed in the other Bluetooth device.
    • The Dell Wireless Bluetooth adapter is installed in the computer.
    • The latest driver for the Bluetooth adapter is installed, if unsure refer to Dell Knowledge Base Article:
      "How to Download and Install the Latest Dell Wireless Bluetooth Driver"
    • The Bluetooth device you are going to pair is within 30 feet (10 meters) of the computer.



  2. Right-click the Bluetooth icon in the lower-right corner of the computer screen.



  3. Click Bluetooth Setup Wizard.



  4. Select the radio button next to I want to find a specific Bluetooth device and configure how this computer will use its services, then click Next.



  5. Put the Bluetooth device in discovery mode. Discovery mode allows the device to be found by your computer and is usually, but not always indicated by a blinking blue LED on the device (refer to your Bluetooth device owner's manual for additional instructions).

    For a Dell branded Bluetooth device, click below to learn how to put it in discovery mode. Then proceed to step 6.
    Put the Dell Bluetooth Keyboard in Discovery Mode
    1. Starting with the Bluetooth device off, press the power switch located on on the bottom of the keyboard.
    2. Find and press the button located underneath the keyboard on the upper-left side.
      The Bluetooth LED on the top of the keyboard blinks when it is in discovery mode and is off when the keyboard is not in discovery mode.


    Put the Dell Bluetooth Mouse in Discovery mode
    1. Starting with the Bluetooth device off, press the power switch located on on the bottom of the mouse.
    2. Find and press the button located on the bottom of the mouse in the upper-right corner.
      The Bluetooth LED on the top of the mouse blinks when in discovery mode and is off when not in discovery mode.


    Put the Dell Travel Mouse in Discovery mode
    1. Starting with the Bluetooth device off, press the power switch located on on the bottom of the mouse.
    2. Find and press the connect button located underneath the keyboard on the upper-left side.
      The Bluetooth LED on the top of the mouse blinks when it is in discovery mode and is off when not in discovery mode.


    Put the BH200 Bluetooth Stereo Headset in Discovery Mode
    1. Starting with the Bluetooth device off, press the power switch located on on the headset.

    2. Press and hold the play/pause center button on the right ear piece until the blue LED starts blinking. This usually takes about 8 seconds.



  6. Click Next to start searching.



  7. Click the icon for the device you want to connect to in order to highlight it and then click Next.



  8. The connection is set up automatically. Once the Confirmation Required screen appears, click the Click here button. This confirms the correct device is set up and connected.
    Some devices, such as keyboards, require you to use the a pass key (security key) to complete the connection. If the device you are adding needs this information a window appears with instructions. For keyboards, the screen displays a number. Type the number on the keyboard and press <Enter>.



  9. You should now be able to use the device. The next time you reboot the computer, the device is connected automatically. If the device does not connect, you may have to press one of the mouse buttons to get it to connect again.

A 360 Bluetooth adapter is installed in the computer

  1. Make sure the following conditions have been met:
    • Fresh batteries are installed in the other Bluetooth device.
    • The Dell Wireless Bluetooth adapter is installed in the computer.
    • The latest driver for the Bluetooth adapter is installed, if unsure refer to Dell Knowledge Base Article:
      "How to Download and Install the Latest Dell Wireless Bluetooth Driver"
    • The Bluetooth device you are going to pair is within 30 feet (10 meters) of the computer.



  2. Right-click the Bluetooth icon located in the lower-right corner of the computer screen.



  3. Click Add New Connection.
    When Bluetooth devices have already been paired, the Bluetooth Settings window appears. When the device you want to connect with is listed but not connected make sure it is within radio range and turned on and then attempt the connection again.



  4. Select Express Mode.



  5. Put the Bluetooth device in discovery mode. Discovery mode allows the device to be found by your computer and is usually, but not always indicated by a blinking blue LED on the device (refer to your Bluetooth device owner's manual for additional instructions).

    Put the Dell Travel Mouse in Discovery mode
    1. Starting with the Bluetooth device off, press the power switch located on on the bottom of the mouse.
    2. Find and press the connect button located underneath the keyboard on the upper-left side.
      The Bluetooth LED on the top of the mouse blinks when it is in discovery mode and is off when not in discovery mode.


    Put the BH200 Bluetooth Stereo Headset in Discovery Mode
    1. Starting with the Bluetooth device off, press the power switch located on on the headset.
    2. Press and hold the play/pause center button on the right ear piece until the blue LED starts blinking. This usually takes about 8 seconds.



  6. Click Next to start searching.



  7. Highlight the device you want to pair with, click Next.
    • The Bluetooth Manager - Bluetooth Security window may appear on the computer. When it does input the Bluetooth Passkey found in the documentation that came with the device, then click OK.
    • The same process may be needed to be done on the Bluetooth device.
    • Depending on the device, additional information may be required, if so click Next. Input the additional information, then click Finish.

A 365 Bluetooth adapter is installed in the computer

  1. Make sure the following conditions have been met:
    • Fresh batteries are installed in the other Bluetooth device.

  2. Right-click the Bluetooth icon in the lower-right corner of the computer screen.



  3. Click Add a Bluetooth Device.



  4. Put the Bluetooth device in discovery mode. Discovery mode allows the device to be found by your computer and is usually, but not always indicated by a blinking blue LED on the device (refer to your Bluetooth device owner's manual for additional instructions).

    Put the Dell Bluetooth Keyboard in Discovery Mode
    1. Starting with the Bluetooth device off, press the power switch located on on the bottom of the keyboard.

    2. Find and press the button located on the bottom of the mouse in the upper-right corner.

  5. On the Bluetooth Setup Wizard window, click Next.
    When the device you want to connect with is listed with a next to it, the devices are paired already and no further action is needed.



  6. Highlight the device you want to pair with, and then click Next. The devices are paired.



  7. When the device requires security the Bluetooth Security Setup window appears, input the Pin Code shown in to the device and Accept or OK it.



  8. Click to check the box next to the service(s) you want to connect with.



  9. Click Next.



  10. In the My Bluetooth Puts Shortcut window, click OK.



  11. Click Finish.

A 370 Bluetooth adapter is installed in the computer

  1. Make sure the following conditions have been met:
    • Fresh batteries are installed in the other Bluetooth device.

Issue 2: The Mouse Keeps Asking for a Passkey

In the event that after pairing, your mouse repeatedly asks for a pass key, you will want to disable the Secure Connection feature:

  1. Right-click the Bluetooth icon in the system tray.



  2. Click Bluetooth Configuration.



  3. Click the Client Applications tab.



  4. Select Human Interface Device, then click Properties.



  5. Uncheck the box next to Secure Connection.



  6. Click Ok.



  7. Click Apply, then click Ok.
