Cause

The Dell Universal Dock D6000 series may not charge some docked computers in some configurations. This is due to either a limitation of the cable connection that is used to dock the computer (Figure 1) or a limitation of the computer that is connected to the dock.

Resolution

Computers docked using USB 3.0 Type-A connections (Figure 1) or computers that require more than 65 W of power input to power the computer and charge the battery require a separate AC power adapter to power the computer and charge the battery.

Note: Check the label of your Dell computer AC adapter for the rated adapter wattage. If the adapter rating is higher than 65 W, you must use your computer AC adapter in addition to the dock AC adapter.

The dock is designed for these computers but requires the computer AC adapter for computer power.

Note: Dell computers manufactured after 2018 with 65-watt USB Type-C power requirements are also supported.

For computers requiring over 65 W, an additional AC adapter may be required for optimal performance. Check your AC adapter for power requirements. The battery does not charge when connected using only a USB 3.0 Type-A (Figure 1) connection to the dock. This is because power delivery is only through Type-C (Figure 2). When using the Type-A connection, then you must connect the computer AC adapter to power the computer and charge the computer battery.
