Instructions

This article provides the necessary steps to reset a PowerConnect 2800 series switch to factory default values without management access.

In the event a PowerConnect 2800 series switch appears to be unresponsive or is otherwise not capable of being logged into, from the web interface, this procedure should be attempted prior to the dispatching of replacement hardware.

1. Connect the null modem serial cable to the switch and configure the terminal emulator as shown below:

  • Set the Baud rate to 9600
  • Set the data format to 8 bits, stop bits to 1, and no parity bit
  • Set flow control to None
  • Select VT100 for Emulation mode (the location of this setting will vary based on terminal emulator you are using)

HOW10330_en_US__1icon The Power Connect 2808 does not have a serial port.   If you are unable to access the switch, use the Management Mode pinhole button to change the switch to unmanaged mode and then back to managed mode to reset the default settings. The Power Connect 2800s have a default IP address of 192.168.2.1 with a default username of "admin" with no password assigned.

2.  Log into the Startup Menu

  1. Power cycle the switch.
  2. Press escape within the first 2 seconds of being prompted, to enter the Startup menu.
  3. You should see the following:
   Startup Menu
[1]  Download Software
[2]  Erase Flash File
[3]  Enter Diagnostic Mode
[4]  Set Terminal Baud-Rate
[5]  Back
Enter your choice or press 'ESC' to exit:

3.  Erase the flash file and overwrite the current config:

  1. Select option 2 - Erase Flash File
  2. Acknowledge the action:  Are you sure (Y/N) ? Y
  3. Write Flash file name (Up to 8 characters, Enter for none.):config
  4. Press enter to complete the process.
HOW10330_en_US__1icon Note:  The current configuration filename is config. Entering this is critical to resetting to factory defaults.

  4.  If you continue to monitor your terminal emulator, you will be prompted to use the Dell Easy Setup Wizard.  To skip the setup wizard enter N and press enter.  The system will be defaulted to 192.168.2.1 255.255.255.0 with a login of admin and no password.

HOW10330_en_US__1icon Note:  Performing this procedure will clear the config and start the switch in unmanaged mode. To enter Managed Mode and log in to the switch, use a paperclip to press the "Managed Mode" button on the front of the switch for approximately 3 seconds.  The switch will still be in an unmanaged state even if you go through the Dell Easy Setup Wizard.
