1. Characters have Jagged or Uneven Edges

  1. Print a font sample list to check if the fonts you are using are supported by the printer.
    1. From the printer control panel, navigate to: Menu, Reports, Print Fonts.
    2. Touch PCL Fonts or PostScript Fonts.
  2. Use a font that is supported by the printer or install the font that you want to use. For more information, contact your system support person.
  3. Resend the print job.
  4. If the prints still contain characters that have jagged or uneven edges, use a font that is supported by the printer or install the font that you want to use on your computer. For more information, contact your system support person.
  5. Resend the print job.

2. Clipped Pages or Images


Note: It is recommended that only Dell Branded Toners and Drums are used in Dell Laser Printers as Dell cannot guarantee compatibility or the print quality of any 3rd party toners or drums.
  1. Move the width and length guides in the tray to the correct positions for the paper loaded.
  2. Resend the print job.
  3. If the page or image is still clipped, From the printer control panel, set the paper size and type in the Paper menu to match the paper loaded in the tray.
  4. Do the paper size and type match the paper loaded in the tray?
  5. Depending on your operating system, specify the paper size from Printing Preferences or from the Print dialog.
  6. Resend the print job.
  7. If the page or image is still clipped, reinstall the imaging unit.
    1. Remove the toner cartridge.
    2. Remove the imaging unit.
      Notice: Potential Damage: Do not expose the imaging unit to direct light for more than 10 minutes. Extended exposure to light may cause print quality problems.
    3. Install the imaging unit, and then the cartridge.
  8. Resend the print job.

3. Printer is Printing Blank Pages


Note: It is recommended that only Dell Branded Toners and Drums are used in Dell Laser Printers as Dell cannot guarantee compatibility or the print quality of any 3rd party toners or drums.
  1. Check if there is packing material left on the imaging unit.
    1. Remove the toner cartridge, and then the imaging unit.
    2. Check if the packing material is properly removed from the imaging unit.
      Note: Potential Damage: Do not expose the imaging unit to direct light for more than 10 minutes. Extended exposure to light may cause print quality problems.
    3. Reinstall the imaging unit, and then the cartridge.
  2. Resend the print job.
  3. If the pages are still blank, redistribute the toner in the imaging unit.
    1. Remove the toner cartridge, and then the imaging unit.
    2. Firmly shake the imaging unit.
      Notice: Potential Damage: Do not expose the imaging unit to direct light for more than 10 minutes. Extended exposure to light may cause print quality problems.
    3. Reinstall the imaging unit, and then the cartridge.
  4. Resend the print job.
  5. If the pages are still blank, replace the imaging unit, and then resend the print job.

4. Compressed Images Appear on Prints

  1. Make sure the size of the paper loaded in the tray matches the fuser type.
    Note: Use a 110-volt fuser for printing on letter-size paper and a 220-volt fuser for printing on A4‑size paper.
  2. Resend the print job.
  3. If the compressed images still appear, replace the fuser. For information on replacing the fuser see "How to Remove and Install the Fuser on the B5460dn/B5465dnf Dell Laser Printer".
  4. Resend the print job.

5. Shadow Images Appear on Prints

  1. Load paper with the correct paper type and weight in the tray.
  2. From the printer control panel, set the paper type and weight in the Paper menu to match the paper loaded in the tray.
  3. Depending on your operating system, specify the paper type and weight from Printing Preferences or from the Print dialog.
  4. Resend the print job.
  5. If shadow images still appear on prints, replace the imaging unit, and then resend the print job.

6. Gray Background on Prints


Note: It is recommended that only Dell Branded Toners and Drums are used in Dell Laser Printers as Dell cannot guarantee compatibility or the print quality of any 3rd party toners or drums.
  1. From the Quality Menu on the printer control panel, decrease the toner darkness.
    Note: 8 is the factory default setting.
  2. Resend the print job.
  3. If the gray background did not disappear from the prints, reinstall the imaging unit and the toner cartridge.
  4. Remove the toner cartridge.
  5. Remove the imaging unit.
    Notice: Potential Damage: Do not expose the imaging unit to direct light for more than 10 minutes. Extended exposure to light can cause print quality problems.
  6. Install the imaging unit, and then the cartridge.
  7. Resend the print job.
  8. If the gray background did not disappear from the prints, replace the imaging unit, and then resend the print job.

7. Incorrect Margins on Prints


  1. Move the width and length guides in the tray to the correct positions for the paper size loaded.
  2. Resend the print job.
  3. From the printer control panel, set the paper size in the Paper menu to match the paper loaded in the tray. Does the paper size match the paper loaded in the tray?
  4. Depending on your operating system, specify the paper size from Printing Preferences or from the Print dialog.
  5. Resend the print job.

8. Horizontal Voids Appear on Prints

  1. Make sure your software program is using a correct fill pattern.
  2. Resend the print job.
  3. If the horizontal voids still appear on prints, load the specified tray or feeder with a recommended type of paper.
  4. Resend the print job.
  5. If the horizontal voids still appear on prints, redistribute the toner in the imaging unit.
    1. Remove the toner cartridge, and then the imaging unit.
    2. Firmly shake the imaging unit.
      Notice: Potential Damage: Do not expose the imaging unit to direct light for more than 10 minutes. Extended exposure to light can cause print quality problems.
    3. Reinstall the imaging unit, and then the cartridge.
  6. Resend the print job.

9. Paper Curl

  1. Move the width and length guides in the tray to the correct positions for the size of the paper loaded.
  2. If the width and length guides positioned correctly, from the printer control panel, set the paper type and weight in the Paper menu to match the paper loaded in the tray.
  3. If the paper type and weight match the type and weight of the paper in the tray, depending on your operating system, specify the paper type and weight from Printing Preferences or from the Print dialog.
  4. Resend the print job.
  5. If the paper still curled, remove the paper from the tray, and then turn it over.
  6. Resend the print job.
  7. If the paper still curled, load paper from a fresh package.
    Note: Paper absorbs moisture due to high humidity. Store paper in its original wrapper until you use it.
  8. Resend the print job.

10. Print Irregularities

  1. Move the width and length guides in the tray to the correct positions for the size of the paper loaded in the tray.
  2. Resend the print job.
  3. If the print irregularities still appear, from the printer control panel, set the paper size and type in the Paper menu to match the paper loaded in the tray.
  4. If the printer settings match the type and weight of the paper loaded in the tray, depending on your operating system, specify the paper type and weight from Printing Preferences or from the Print dialog.
  5. Resend the print job.
  6. If the print irregularities still appear, check if the paper loaded in the tray has texture or rough finishes.
  7. If you are printing on textured or rough paper, from the printer control panel, set the paper texture in the Paper menu to match the paper loaded in the tray.
  8. Load paper from a fresh package.
    Note: Paper absorbs moisture due to high humidity. Store paper in its original wrapper until you use it.
  9. Resend the print job.
  10. If the print irregularities still appear, replace the imaging unit, and then resend the print job.

11. Repeating Defects Appear on Prints

  1. Replace the imaging unit if the distance between the defects is equal to any of the following:
    • 47.8 mm (1.88 in.)
    • 96.8 mm (3.81 in.)
    • 28.5 mm (1.12 in.)
  2. Resend the print job.
  3. If the repeating defects still appear on prints, replace the fuser if the distance between the defects is equal to either of the following:
    • 94.25 mm (3.71 in.)
    • 95.2 mm (3.75 in.)
  4. Resend the print job.

12. Print is Too Dark

  1. From the Quality menu on the printer control panel, reduce the toner darkness.
    Note: 8 is the factory default setting.
  2. Resend the print job.
  3. If the print is still too dark, From the printer control panel, set the paper type, texture and weight in the Paper menu to match the paper loaded in the tray.
  4. Resend the print job.
  5. Check that the tray is set to the type, texture, and weight of the paper loaded, depending on your operating system, specify the paper type, texture and weight from Printing Preferences or from the Print dialog.
  6. Resend the print job.
  7. If the print is still too dark, check if the paper loaded in the tray has texture or rough finishes.
  8. When printing on textured or rough paper, on the printer control panel, change the texture settings in the Paper Texture menu to match the paper you are printing on.
  9. Load paper from a fresh package.
    Note: Paper absorbs moisture due to high humidity. Store paper in its original wrapper until you use it.
  10. Resend the print job.
  11. If the print is still too dark, replace the imaging unit, and then resend the print job.

13. Print is Too Light

  3. If the print is still too light, from the printer control panel, set the paper type, texture, and weight in the Paper menu to match the paper loaded in the tray.
  4. If the tray is not set to the type, texture, and weight of the paper loaded, change the paper type, texture, and weight to match the paper loaded in the tray.
  5. Depending on your operating system, specify the paper type, texture, and weight from Printing Preferences or from the Print dialog.
  6. Resend the print job.
  7. If the print is still too light, load paper from a fresh package.
    Note: Paper absorbs moisture due to high humidity. Store paper in its original wrapper until you use it.
  8. Resend the print job.
  9. If the print is still too light, redistribute the toner in the imaging unit.
    1. Remove the toner cartridge, and then the imaging unit.
    2. Firmly shake the imaging unit.

14. Printer is Printing Solid Black Pages

  2. Resend the print job.
  3. If the printer is still printing solid black pages, replace the imaging unit, and then resend the print job.

22. Toner Rubs Off

  5. Resend the print job.
  6. Test with another toner.
