What is the Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program?

The Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program is a software application that allows Dell customers to impact the development of future imaging products. By sharing information with Dell regarding their printing behaviors, customers can contribute to improvements of future products.
There are two major uses for this data:

  • To assist in the development of future products
  • To assist in the design of promotional programs
Additionally, customers may elect to be eligible for direct marketing offers thru this program.

The Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program adheres to all of the provisions of the Dell privacy policy. Data collected will be limited only to device behavior and the printer's service tag. No other personal information or data will be collected. The customer has the option of viewing the data being collected and also can opt in or out at any time.



Review Listing of Dell-Branded Printers that Will Include the Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program

All Dell inkjet printers sold after February 1, 2005, will either include the program or will have a driver available on support.dell.com for download that will include it.



Review the Type of Information the Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program Collects

The information collected varies depending on which Dell product you are installing, but generally includes the following:

  • The Printer Service Tag Number

  • The date the Dell product is installed

  • The number of pages you print

  • The amount of ink you use

  • The type of paper you use

  • The different Dell software drivers you use

  • The number of jobs you print

  • Use of the automatic document feeder (ADF), where applicable

  • Use of the control panel buttons



How Do I Participate in the Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program?

During the printer installation process, the customer is asked to select Yes or No to participate in the program. The customer cannot complete the install until they check one of the options.

Additionally, the customer may also elect to be eligible for direct marketing offers at this time by selecting the I want to be eligible to receive money-saving offers, information on new products, and additional marketing information from Dell. box during the installation process.



Is the Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program a Version of Spyware?

The Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program is not Spyware. There are two important distinctions:

  1. Customers will opt into this program (it is not forced on them)
  2. The information is only seen/used by Dell-authorized personnel and is not sold or given to outside research organizations.
Customers who do not select the I want to be eligible to receive money-saving offers, information on new products, and additional marketing information from Dell option during the installation process will only have their information used for future product development purposes.

The Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program only monitors printing behavior and does not monitor any other PC functionality that is not associated with printing.



How Does Dell Ensure that Customers Know When They Are Participating In the Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program?

The Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program complies with the Dell Privacy Policy. The Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program addresses four key aspects of this policy:

Notice - The Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program will be installed at the time of printer driver installation. Customers are informed of the collection and intended use of the requested information and the information collected by the Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program is visible by the customer. This link points to the Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program application and allows users to opt-in or opt-out and get more information about the data collected and how Dell intends to use it.
Access - Customers can access the Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program data file to review what data is being collected. A link to the Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program application will be available in the printer properties page or the Dell All-In-One Center where the user will find printer configuration information.
Security - Customer data is kept secure in compliance with the terms of our overall privacy policy



How Does the Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program Collect Information?

As a customer prints there is a file that updates with the print activity. Periodically, printer usage data is automatically transmitted to Dell's service provider over the Internet. This information is stored in the United States. When the transmission occurs it does not interfere with computer performance. No extra charges are incurred by participating in the Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program. This program will not collect any other personal information.



How Is the Information That Has Been Collected From the Dell™ Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program Used?

The Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program will help Dell better understand our printer customers and how they are using our printers. This data will allow Dell to better meet customer needs with future products.
Additionally, the information may be used to develop promotional programs and/or direct marketing offers. Customers who do not select the I want to be eligible to receive money-saving offers, information on new products, and additional marketing information from Dell during the installation process will only have their information used for future product development purposes.



Can I End My Participation in the Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program At Any Time?

Yes. At any time, you can end your participation in the Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program.

To end your participation, perform the following:

  1. Click the Start button, point to All Programs, point to Dell Printers and then point to Dell X Printer, where X represents the model number of the printer.
  2. Click Dell Printer Solution Center.
    The Dell Printer Solution Center window appears.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. Click the Dell Printer Customer Experience Improvement Program option.
  5. Uncheck the participation box to end your participation.
  6. Click the Ok button.
