Dell recommends the customer review specifics about the update to determine if it applies to your system. The update contains changes that impact only certain configurations, or provides new features that may/may not apply to your environment.
Important Information
For systems using Windows 98 version 4.10.1998, the RUN_ME.REG utility available on this diskette should be installed before upgrading to this BIOS. Installing this utility will prevent Windows 98 version 4.10.1998 from converting to ACPI mode when hardware detection is performed. See README.TXT, included on this diskette, for more details.

This utility has been updated. All Windows 98 version 4.10.1998 users are encouraged to install this utility, even if they have previously installed an earlier version.

Fixes & Enhancements
The following updates were made to the A13 BIOS to create A14:
Issues Fixed:
1. Fixed issue in which some batteries may permanently stop charging.
2. Fixed issue in which Remote BIOS Update may fail to update the BIOS.
3. Fixed issue in which the system intermittently fails to detect when a new battery is inserted.
4. Fixed issue in which System Setup may take 7 seconds to recognize a new battery.
5. Fixed issue in which the system may fail to complete POST if the battery is not responding.
6. Fixed failure to log on to a Boot Server when booting from a PXE-enabled CardBus NIC.
7. Fixed video corruption seen when entering System Setup with more than 256MB RAM installed.
8. Fixed issue seen when using Safeguard Easy security software in which a "No bootable devices" error is seen after entering the correct password.
Enhancements:
1. Optimized the battery charging algorithm.
Installation Instructions
Floppy Disk Boot to Disk for CPTX-A14.exe
Download
1. Click Download Now, to download the file.
2. When the File Download window appears, click Save (Windows XP users will click Save) this program to disk and click OK. The Save In:
window appears.
3. From the Save In: field, click the down arrow then click to
select Desktop and click Save. The file will download to your desktop.
4. If the Download Complete window appears, click Close. The file
icon appears on your desktop.
Hard Drive Floppy Disk Creation
1. Get 1 blank, formatted floppy disks.
2. Double-click the new icon (it looks like a floppy diskette) on
the desktop. The Self-Extractor window appears.
3. Click Setup. An black MS-DOS window appears with a message
indicating that you need 1 floppy diskettes.
4. Press the [ENTER] key.
A message appears prompting you to insert a blank floppy diskette.
5. Insert a floppy disk into the floppy disk drive.
6. Press the [ENTER] key. A message appears indicating that all
data on the disk will be erased.
7. Press the [y] key and then press the [ENTER] key.
The files are copied to the floppy diskette. If the procedure requires
more than one diskette, repeat steps 5 – 7 until you reach the end of the diskette set.
8. After all the files have been copied to the last floppy disk,
press the [ENTER] key and the MS-DOS window closes.
Install
1. Insert the first (or the only) disk of the set into the Floppy
drive.
2. Click Start, click Shutdown, click Restart, and then click OK.
Windows XP Users need only click restart.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Hard Drive Installation (via WinZip) with Setup.exe File for A14-CPTX.exe
Download
1.Click Download Now, to download the file.
2.When the File Download window appears, click Save (Windows XP
users will click Save) this program to disk and click OK. The Save In:
window appears.
3.From the Save In: field, click the down arrow then click to
select Desktop and click Save. The file will download to your desktop.
4.If the Download Complete window appears, click Close. The file
icon appears on your desktop.
Install
1.Double-click the new icon on the desktop labeled A14-CPTX.exe.
2.The Self-Extracting window appears and prompts you to extract or
unzip to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\r44010. Write down this path so the executable (I.e.
Setup.exe) file can be found later.
3.The Self-Extractor window appears.
4.Click OK.
5.After completing the file extraction, if the Self-Extractor
window is still open, close it.
6.Click the Start button and then click Run.
7.Type C:\DELL\DRIVERS\r44010 in the Open textbox and then click OK.
8.Follow the on-screen installation instructions.
