Custom Instructions for boot-floppy-rh9.tar.gz:

Currently, two versions of the Red Hat Linux 9 CDs are available to the
public.
1) Kernel 2.4.20-8
2) Kernel 2.4.20-6

The two images included in this release are meant to assist in installing
Red Hat Linux 9 on a PowerEdge 1650 or PowerEdge 4600

It is important to identify the kernel on the CD before proceeding.

To identify the kernel version on the CD, perform the following steps:

Using a Linux system
1) Insert Red Hat Linux 9 CD 1 into your CD-ROM drive
2) mount /mnt/cdrom
3) ls /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/kernel-*

Using a Windows System
1) Insert Red Hat Linux 9 CD 1 into your CD-ROM drive
2) Explore the Red Hat CD-ROM drive
3) Click the RPMS folder
4) Look for files that start with kernel-.

Download boot-floppy-rh9.tar.gz to a temporary directory (/tmp) in
your Linux system and untar it.
cd /tmp
tar -xvzf ./boot-floppy-rh9.tar.gz

Now, write the image that matches your kernel into a floppy.
Insert a blank floppy into the floppy drive.
From your Linux system, do the following:
If your CD's kernel is 2.4.20-8:
dd if=./boot-floppy-rh9-2.4.20-8.img of=/dev/fd0
If your CD's kernel is 2.4.20-6:
dd if=./boot-floppy-rh9-2.4.20-6.img of=/dev/fd0

Boot your system with this floppy. Once you get to the "Installation
Method" screen (assuming you are doing a CD install), insert your Red
Hat Linux 9 CD and follow the installation instructions on the screen
