A: Uninstall the Existing Dell Laser Printer Drivers
Before reinstalling any printer drivers, it is best to remove any printer drivers that were previously installed, not doing so can cause problems that prevent the computer from communicating with the printer.
To uninstall previous printer drivers:
- Turn the printer on.
- Ensure that the Dell Laser Printer is connected to your computer (USB cable, wireless or wired).
NOTE: If the printer is no longer available, you may have less success removing the printer without it being attached.
- Ensure that there is nothing in the print queue.
For more information, refer to the Dell Knowledge Base article How to Cancel a Print Job in the Queue and follow the instructions.
- Run the Printer troubleshooter to diagnose and automatically correct any printer spooler issues. For more information, refer to the Dell Knowledge Base article, How to Resolve Printer Spooler Errors.
- Uninstall the printer:
- For Windows 10 perform the following steps:
- Press and hold the Windows () key, and then press the r key.
- In the Run box type appwiz.cpl, and then press Enter.
- Touch or click the Printer listing that you want to remove, and then touch or click Uninstall.
NOTE: When your printer is not listed, go to step g.
- Confirm removing the printer.
NOTE: When you have a multifunction printer, there may be more than one listing, repeat the process to remove any remaining listings of your printer.
- Bookmark this article, as a restart is needed now and there are more steps to follow.
- Restart the computer and return to this article.
- Press and hold the Windows () key, and then press the r key.
- In the Run box type control panel, and then press Enter.
- Touch or click View devices and printers.
- Touch and hold or right-click the wanted printer.
NOTE: When your printer is not listed, go to step n.
- Touch or click Remove device.
- The User Account Control window may appear, if so touch or click Yes.
- Touch or click Yes to remove the Printer.
- Select any other printing device left in the list, and then touch or click Print server properties.
- Touch or click the Drivers tab.
- Touch or click your printer.
- Touch or click Remove to remove the Printer.
NOTE: When you have a multifunction printer, there may be more than one listing, repeat the process to remove any remaining listings of your printer.
- Bookmark this article as a restart of the computer is needed at this point.
- Restart the computer, and then return to this article. Then follow the instructions on how to install drivers from a previous version of Windows in compatibility mode for your printer.

- Move the cursor to the upper right corner of the screen until the Charms Bar appears.
- Click or touch Settings.
- Click or touch Change PC settings.
- Click or touch PC and devices.
- Click or touch Devices.
- Click or touch the printer that you want to remove (when the printer is not listed no further actions are needed).
- Click or touch Remove device.
- Click or touch Yes to remove the printer.
- For Windows 7 perform following steps:
- Click the Start button.
- Click Devices and Printers.
- Right-click the printer that you want to uninstall (when the printer is not listed no further actions are needed).
- Select Remove device.
- Click Yes to remove the printer.
- For Windows Vista perform following steps:
- Click Start.
- Click Control Panel.
- Click Printer.
- Click File.
- Click Server Properties.
- Click the Driver tab.
- Click one or more drivers you want to remove.
- Click Remove.
- Click Yes to confirm the removal.
- Click Close.
- For Windows XP perform following steps:
- Click Start.
- Click Control Panel.
- Click Printers and Faxes.
- Click File.
- Click Server Properties.
- Click the Driver tab.
- Click one or more drivers you want to remove.
- Click Remove.
- Click Yes to confirm the removal.
- Click Close.
NOTE: Disconnect any USB cable from the printer, wait for the installation process to tell you when to reconnect a USB cable.

B: Download and Install the Latest Dell Laser Printer Drivers
Driver releases are designed to update features and to correct functionality, it is recommended to update to the latest version of the drivers available for your printer.
NOTES:
- Before installing any printer drivers, it is best to remove any drivers for your printer that were previously installed, not doing so can cause problems that prevent the computer from communicating with the printer. Refer to the Uninstall the Existing Dell Laser Printer Drivers section for more information.
- When looking for Windows 10, Windows 8, or Windows 7 drivers for your printer and it is not listed as having any for those Operating System, some or all the printer's functionality may still be available using Compatibility Mode as a means to install printer drivers from a past version of Windows. For more information, see Dell Knowledge Base article Installing Printer Drivers From a Previous Version of Windows.
- Open a browser to the Dell Drivers & Downloads site.
- Enter your printer's Service Tag to get a concise list of drivers for your specific product model, and then click Search to continue. For information about how to locate your printer Service Tag see the Dell Knowledge Base article How to Find the Service Tag on a Dell Printer.
NOTE: When the Service Tag is not available.
- Touch or click Browse all products.
- Touch or click Electronics & Accessories.
- Touch or click Printers & Accessories.
- Select your printer model (the model number of your printer is shown on the front of the printer).
- Using the drop-down menu under Operation System, select the Operation System that matches what is installed on your computer.
NOTE: When looking for Windows 10, Windows 8 or Windows 7 drivers for your printer and it is not listed as having any for those Operating Systems, some or all the printer's functionality may still be available using Compatibility Mode as a means to install printer drivers from a past version of Windows. For more information, see the Dell Knowledge Base article
Installing Printer Drivers From a Previous Version of Windows.
- Under Download list look for files that are listed as Application or Drivers for OS Deployment (something that includes the word Driver or Drivers in the title).
- Make note of the one of more File Names listed, you must know it after the file finishes downloading.
- Ensure the checkbox to the left of each file is checked, and then touch or click Download All.
NOTES:
- The Application download contains a toner reorder application and utilities, some also include the printer driver. It does not include the extra software that was included on the CDs that came with the printer such as Optical Character Reader (OCR) software due to copyright restrictions.
- Some Laser printers have both an Application and a Driver file that needs to be downloaded and installed, some only have one. If in doubt download and install all one or more files that are listed in the Application and Drivers for OS Deployment sections.
- When an Application download does not appear, then only printer drivers are available for download.
- You may be asked to Save, Save file or the download process may start automatically, depending on your browser.
- Your browser gives you the option to open the downloads folder, once the file is downloaded.
- Touch and hold or right-click the driver file, then touch or click Run as Administrator.
- The User Account Control window may appear, if so touch or click Yes to start the installation and follow the prompts that appear to install the printer software or driver.

- Touch or click Browse all products.
- Touch or click Electronics & Accessories.
- Touch or click Printers & Accessories.
- Select your printer model (the model number of your printer is shown on the front of the printer).
- Using the drop-down menu under Operation System, select the Operation System that matches the Operating System on your computer or is the most recent listed.
NOTE: The order of Windows Operating System from newest to oldest is: Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows ME and Windows 2000.
- Under Download list look for the file that is listed as Firmware, when no firmware is shown, move to the next oldest Operating System.
NOTES:
- Dell mostly installs 64-bit versions of Windows, when selecting drivers from a previous version of Windows, look for a 64-bit version that is the closest to what is installed on your computer.
- When a 64-bit version is not available, a 32bit version may work, but there is no guarantee.
- Make note of the File Name: listed as firmware, you must know it after the file finishes downloading.
- Touch or click Download to the right of the file.
- You may be asked to Save, Save file or the download process may start automatically, depending on your browser.
- Your browser gives you the option to open the downloads folder, once the file is downloaded.
NOTE: When the Operating System that is installed on your computer matches the Operating System that is listed for the driver that is downloaded, go to step 16.
- Touch and hold or right-click the file that is downloaded, and then click Properties.
- Touch or click the Compatibility tab.
- Touch or click Change Settings for All Users.
- Touch or click the box next to Run this program in compatibility mode for:
- Using the drop-down menu select the Operating System that matches the Operating System of the driver downloaded.
- Touch or click Apply, and then touch or click OK.
- Touch or click OK.
- Touch and hold or right-click the driver file, then touch or click Run as Administrator.
- The User Account Control window may appear, if so touch or click Yes to start the installation and follow the prompts that appear to install the firmware.

5. Obtaining the Software Included With Your Dell Printer
The drivers and management software for your printer are available on the Dell Support Page. To install the extra non-Dell (third-party) software (such as the Optical Character Reader (OCR), PaperPort so forth) that came with your printer, you need the Compact Disc or DVD that came with the printer. These non-Dell software are licensed and cannot be put on our website.
