I have some Dell Precision systems, and could not get NUMA support working in Linux. I found that the kernel option acpi=rsdt fixes the NUMA problem. By default, Linux uses the XSDT table, which is a replacement for RSDT. Either the XSDT table has an error, or Linux is parsing it incorrectly.
I want to return the laptop and either get a refund or get Ubuntu removed and Windows installed. My daughter has never been able to use this.

Thanks

failed attempt to install linux causes flash drive to be useless

I tried to install Ubuntu using a flashdrive. Part of the procedure to is download an image file to the flashdrive so my netbook sees it as a CD. I have given up on Linux for now and have copied the Ubuntu to a CD and deleted it from the flash drive.

But I can't delete everything from the drive. Regardless of how I try, including 2 different shredders, I can't get rid of a file called pool. I open pool and I get main. I open main and I get p. I open p and I get ppp. I open ppp and I get PPP_245~D. WinXP can't open PPP245.

File shredders won't eat them because they say the file(s) are in use.

I can't record anything on the flashdrive because it still looks like an optical drive to both my computers. When I try to record something I get a popup telling me to put a disc in the drive. Prior to my attempt to install Ubuntu, when I used the flashdrive, my computers recognized it as a Kingston flashdrive.

How do I get rid of pool and/or make the flashdrive stop being a virtual optical drive? The pool file maybe what makes the drive look like an optical drive.

Note from Lionel: It's been a while since I've talked about Linux on Direct2Dell. Shortly after Ubuntu 9.04 was released in April 2009, we had a request from IdeaStorm user Shannon VanWagner to start pre-loading 9.04. Though it's late, we're now offering Ubuntu 9.04 on a few more Dell machines to customers in the United States. Specifically the Studio XPS 13, Inspiron 15, and the Inspiron 537 desktop. The Mini 10 and the 10v are still running a customized version of the 8.04 version of the Ubuntu OS. And the Mini 10v can be ordered with Ubuntu Moblin Remix Developer Edition.

To see all the systems we're offering with Linux, go to www.dell.com/ubuntu.

With that context, I'll turn things over to John Hull so he can shed light on what to expect from Ubunu 9.04.

--Lionel

----------------------------------

I'd like to give a quick update on the technical details for what we have added with our 9.04 release. We have continued to build and improve upon on what we did for our previous Ubuntu offerings, and here are some of the highlights:

We now provide Cyberlink's PowerDVD application for DVD playback (instead of LinDVD which we previously shipped). We also continue to provide Fluendo GStreamer codecs for mp3, wma, and wmv playback, which will work with your favorite Linux media player.

We created and provided a new GUI tool for creating recovery/restore media for the OS

We provide a new method to recover your Ubuntu preload from the hard drive

We have chosen to use GRUB 2 bootloader instead of the Ubuntu default GRUB 1 (a.k.a. GRUB legacy) bootloader. We have been testing GRUB 2 for over a year now, and feel it is ready for general use. The Ubuntu community has decided to make GRUB 2 the default in Ubuntu 9.10, so our customers will already have that feature enabled.

A common complaint we heard a few years ago was that there were no Linux drivers for Dell wireless cards. As of the date of this blog post, all currently-shipping Intel- and Dell-branded wireless cards (as well as most from the past several years) are now supported natively in Ubuntu 9.04. These drivers should also be included in most other newer Linux distributions as well.

Our Ubuntu 9.04 offering is still the 32-bit version and not the 64-bit version ("amd64" architecture). We continue to evaluate when to make the transition, and the main sticking point continues to be solid, stable Adobe Flash support for 64-bit. There are currently options
available in the community, including a beta of a native 64-bit Flash
plugin. However, none of these have proven to be reliably stable, so we'll continue working with Adobe until a viable option is available.

For more information, our Dell wiki page for 9.04 can be found at the previous link. If you would like to download and install 9.04 with our custom Ubuntu ISO, it can be downloaded here.

As always, please report any OS issues in Launchpad, or you can always ask any general questions to our linux-desktops mailing list..

I think from the sticker on the laptop it came originally with Vista (I don't know if it was the 32 or 64 bit version).

I'm interested in running Ubuntu so I resized the ntfs partition and installed Ubuntu 9.04 (64bit). Works OK but I'm not keeping the laptop for other reasons (it's too big for daily transport) and it will passed on to another collegue at work.

I notice that I cannot longer boot in XP (through GRUB) because some hall.dll seems missing. Possibly the resizing of the partition was not done correctly.

Status :

The laptop has still the Dell Utility partition as well as the Recovery one which I presume contains the original Vista configuration.

However because of the reinstalled XP the F8 trick to get into the advanced boot options and restore the Vista software is not available (and of course since I cannot into XP and further more it would in any case not know of the Vista recovery partition, this route is not availble to me as well)

I think what I'm looking for is a boot CD/DVD that would allow me to start the recovery process from the Vista recovery partition but I'm not able to locate such a product on the Dell website (despite searching for over an hour).

Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

Frederic

Inspiron 910 & Ubuntu Issue

I just recently got an Inspiron 910 with Ubuntu and the bottom of the line basics. Ubuntu prompted me that there were some updates available. I let it run through the updates. Now it says the harddrive is full after the updates. I realize that it is only a 4 gb hardrive. Did not realize just the operating system would consume all of the space. So I am completely new to Ubuntu and not to familiar with it yet. I basically wanted this laptop just for the internet. Did not plan on storing much of anything in it, but would be nice to have some space. So I guess, I would like to go through and decide what I can do without, on it in order to free up some space. I am going to see about going to the add/remove programs and remove like some of the games and stuff that I will not use. Are there any recomendations on this?

Also, I have a Sprint Novatel U727 aircard that I would like to use on this. I looked to Sprint and they have a pretty good desciptive breakdown on how to do this, but since I am not familiar with alot of the terminoligy used, I am kind of lost. Also, looked to Ubuntu, but still waiting on some responses. If anyone is familiar with this aircard and are able to use it, would sure appreciate some advice on this.

Thanks in advance

A friend ask me to setup his Dell Mini 1210, I ask him about the
user password that he used during the setup and he said that he did not enter
one

When the computer is started the user is automatically
started without requesting a password. When you try to do a software upgrade it
requests a password and it will not take a blank or just “enter-key”

Any suggestions on how to get or set the password

You may have seen posts from sites like Engadget that discussed it in more detail. We figured the introduction of the Latitude Z was a good reason to start shipping the full hardware plus software version of Latitude ON.

Latitude ON is basically a system on a system. It's based on a dedicated low-voltage ARM processor (Texas Instrument's OMAP 3430 processor) that runs a slimmed-down version of a Linux OS. It allows a user to boot into the contained OS environment to give you always-on access to an Firefox-based Internet browser (without Flash support) and critical business information while using a fraction of the battery power your laptop uses when it's running a full OS. Essentially, you can quickly access all the information you're used to accessing on a smartphone using the larger screen and keyboard that your laptop provides.

To see what I mean by quick access, take a look at this boot comparison video:

(Please visit the site to view this media)

Here's a more detailed look at the features:

Here's another StudioDell video which features a good overview about how the full version of Latitude ON works:

(Please visit the site to view this media)

Latitude ON allows you to connect via Wi-Fi or embedded mobile
broadband. I say embedded because in Latitude ON mode, the external
ports aren't active. We've been shipping Latitude ON-ready Latitude E4200 and E4300 systems for a while now. Essentially, that means they can run the Latitude ON Reader software. In contrast to the full version, the Reader software resides on the main partition of the hard drive and provides access to e-mail, calendar and contacts from the last synched version of your Outlook data.

We will offer the hardware upgrade option to existing Latitude E4200 and E4300 customers via a customer kit for purchase. I'll update this post with more details about the kit when I have them. All Latitude Z systems will feature the full version of Latitude ON, complete with the processor hardware.

Need driver for dell 968 for a linux ubuntu 9.4 machine

I recently changed my OS from windows media center edition to linux ubuntu 9.4. As we shared at the Intel Developer Forum today, Dell and Canonical have worked closely to ensure good hardware/software compatibility, and seamless integration between Ubuntu and Moblin. For those not familiar, Moblin is an open source project, created by Intel and hosted by the Linux Foundation, focused on building a Linux-based platform optimized for mobile devices. It has a unique user interface focused on using the Internet, social networking activity, and media consumption, and is optimized for small screens. The Moblin project recently released version 2.0, which includes many new features such as the myzone home screen panel, aggregation of social networking content (such as Twitter, last.fm, and instant messaging), a web browser optimized for the user interface, a "zoomable" media player, and an updated connection manager with a new user interface.

For a bit more, watch this demo from Doug Anson:

(Please visit the site to view this media)

Canonical, the company behind the Ubuntu Linux distribution, has combined the core Moblin Version 2.0 interface, libraries, and applications with the internals of Ubuntu Linux 9.04 to create a new Linux distribution, Ubuntu Moblin Remix. We have labeled this distribution as a "Developer Edition", as it is still a work in progress at this time. We are currently targeting developers, Linux enthusiasts, and early adopters who want to get an early look at the software and begin developing for Moblin, participating in the community, and using new technology.

Ubuntu Moblin Remix Developer Edition can be purchased factory-installed on an Inspiron Mini 10v on from www.dell.com/ubuntu. 2.6.18-128.el5. We have an MD3000 attached and have installed the DKMS
Dell drivers for mptlinux, linuxrdac.

We then upgraded the kernel to 2.6.18-128.4.1. Initially we could not
talk to the MD3000 at all. We re-installed the drivers Dell drivers.
Everything is working, but “dkms status|grep -i weak” shows that
drivers dkms kernel module drivers are installed-weak.

- Is this an issue?
- How to we correct this?
- It has been suggested that we use grub to boot back to the prior
kernel and issue “dkms match –k 2.6.18-128.4.1.el5 –templatekernel
2.6.18-128.el5”. Is this a good idea?
- What is the proper procedure we should do for the next kernel update (when we are using dkms)?

Printing from the Fire Fox 3.0.14 web browser does not procuce acceptable output.

I have a hp LaserJet 8000 printer that works great. The main differances is it is listed in the PrintTool menu and it supports Postscript. I have tried to install several versions of the hplip driver. I have tried hplip-3.9.8 Could not resolve all the dependencies. hplib-2.8.12 and 2.8.6b No luck getting things to work.
