Flash-Optimized All-Flash ArraysDell’s exclusive Flash-Optimized multi-tier AFAs combine the best features of multiple types of enterprise-class SSDs for the ultimate in simultaneous performance and cost-savings.
Innovative Data Progression technology sends all incoming writes to WI (Write-Intensive) SSDs, to ensure the highest write speeds. Data is then migrated to RI (Read-Intensive) SSDs, offering equivalent read performance at a lower cost.This intelligent automation keeps your applications running smoothly using the least expensive mix of drives. In addition, because the WI “write layer” frees your RI drives from primary writes, they’ll last much longer than drives in competing all-RI arrays.
Hybrid arraysBoth the single and multi-tier AFAs described above may be further expanded and cost-optimized by adding a tier of spinning disks either within the original SC4020 chassis or in one or more expansion enclosures.
SC Series hybrid arrays deliver the best of both worlds – performance plus cost savings. All writes go to Tier 1 SSDs, guaranteeing outstanding performance. Only cold data is moved to spinning disk, but since that can constitute a very large percentage of overall capacity (up to 80% of all data is written once and never accessed again), many customers will save money by diversifying their drives.
Traditional HDD arraysThe SC4020 can also be deployed as a traditional array with hard drives only. For those who don’t need the performance of flash, data progression still provides best-in-class tiering to optimize performance and enhance your HDD solution. Features such as FastTrack disk optimization ensure you get the most out of your hard drive investment.

Data Progression: Automated tiered storageBased on actual use and application performance requirements, SC Series Data Progression automatically optimizes your drive tiers and RAID levels. By default, all new data is written to fastest Tier 1 drives at RAID 10 performance levels, then converted to economical RAID 5/6 for subsequent reads.
As data ages, it is moved to less expensive storage until it becomes active again. All-flash and hybrid arrays can leverage the unique attributes of write- and read-intensive SSDs in combination. Data is precisely where it’s needed, when it’s needed – the perfect combination of high IOPS and cost savings.
Space savings in the data centerThe SC Series offers Dynamic Capacity (thin provisioning) that completely separates storage allocation from utilization, enabling you to allocate any size storage volume up front while only consuming physical capacity on write. For data protection or "thin replication," Data Instant Replays solve tradeoff issues between snapshot granularity and capacity cost savings. Remote Instant Replay leverages the same space-efficient snapshots to deliver a cost-effective disaster recovery solution between local and remote sites.
Additionally, intelligent block-level compression – with up to 93% capacity savings* – is available on HDD and SSD arrays that fully integrate with Data Progression auto-tiering for maximum cost savings and minimum performance impact.
Business continuityFor seamless disaster recovery, easy storage migrations or the creation of federated multi-array systems, the Storage Center Live Volume feature acts as a "storage hypervisor," allowing data to be copied or moved between arrays with no interruption to host access.
