PowerVault™ MD1000 is a 3Gb/s serial attached SCSI (SAS) expansion enclosure that offers seamless capacity expansion for existing PoweVault MD3000 and MD3000i arrays.
- Expand with up to two enclosures behind the PowerVault MD3000 or MD3000i
- Enables mixing SAS and serial ATA (SATA) drives in a single enclosure
- Fifteen 3.5" drives in just 3U of rack space

Simple Storage Expansion for Capacity
The PowerVault MD1000 expansion array leverages higher capacity 3.5" drives and supports mixing both SAS and SATA drives within a single enclosure making it ideal for high-capacity applications. The modular design enables simple expansion of your existing PowerVault MD3000 and MD3000i external controller based arrays by daisy chaining 2 additional MD1000 enclosures for a total of 45 drives. The versatility of the PowerVault MD1000 enables you to configure the specific combination of storage resources you need now, and add more storage volume later, while ensuring life-cycle and usability of your hardware for the long-term.
Excellent Drive Flexibility
![]() | The PowerVault MD family enables organizations to mix SAS and SATA drives, delivering excellent flexibility to align data requirements with drive capabilities, speed, capacity and cost to help optimize your storage environment. SAS for Performance SAS can deliver the speed, performance and reliability to satisfy mainstream single server applications. SAS performance makes it ideal for demanding server applications, such as email or database applications, that store active and frequently changing information. Nearline SAS — Performance of SAS, Capacities of SATA The new 7,200 rpm SAS drives leverage the performance efficiencies of SAS, making it ideal for customers who are looking for the low cost per GB but can't sacrifice performance. In everyday use, customers can see up to a 30 percent performance increase with the 7,200 rpm SAS drive over the 7,200 rpm SATA drives. |
![]() | SATA for Capacity SATA disk drives deliver a compelling cost-per-Gigabyte alternative to SAS. SATA drives are ideal for high-capacity applications, such as digital imaging, file archiving, audio/video storage, or back-up to disk applications, where data is accessed and modified less frequently. Energy-Efficient SATA — Superior GB per Watt Solution The 5,400 rpm SATA drive offers customers a high-capacity, energy-efficient alternative to traditional SATA drives. It is ideal for capacity-intensive applications in power-constrained environments. This 5,400 rpm SATA drive can reduce power consumption up to 30 percent with less than a 10 percent degradation in random I/O (input/output) performance over some 7,200 rpm SATA drives. |
