Dell Virtual Appliance Portal
As virtualization software technology continues to grow in popularity, Dell is collaborating with several of our top partners to offer another side of this technology - virtual appliances. Virtual appliances are pre-built, ready to deploy files that contain both an operating system and in some cases, an application. These appliances can be "run" on a variety of hypervisors and allows you to view and manipulate server class operating systems and applications.
Dell has teamed up with key partners like VMware® , Microsoft® , SymantecTM , Red Hat® , Novell® , Ubuntu® , Blue Lane® , IdentiPHITM , EnterasysTM , and Double-TakeTM , ProofpointTM , Certeon® , and Reflex SecurityTM to bring you some of the best virtual appliances available. An easy way to become familiar with virtual appliances is to start with a free version of a hypervisor. Some versions, like VMware Player, may be run on a desktop operating system, and others, such as VMware Server or Virtual Server R2, may be run on top of a current server operating system. Virtual appliances may also be run on VMware® ESX ServerTM , Microsoft® Hyper V, or Citrix® XenServer.
For many, virtual appliances are an excellent way to "try before you buy." Virtual appliances allow you to get a better look into how a software program or operating system actually looks and feels - without having to set up a complex, separate test environment. Also, these appliances provide much greater flexibility than a flash type demo that guides you through a console. Virtual machines are typically offered as a free download; some are offered full featured but only for a limited time, while others are trial versions only. Support for virtual appliances and free hypervisors is provided by the respective vendors.

Try virtual, buy physical
Hardware appliances are a staple item for many datacenters around the globe. Dell's OEM Industry Solution Group
provides a variety of solutions tuned to match Dell PowerEdge servers to ISV solutions. Many of our OEM ISG partners offer their product as either a physical or virtual appliance; others are using virtual appliance packaging as a way for customers to preview their solution without having to consume IT resources to set up hardware for a test scenario.
Symantec Mail Security 8300 Series
The new SymantecTM Mail Security 8300 - Virtual Edition is a full production virtual appliance. In addition to simplifying the trial process, customers can roll out the virtual appliance into their production environments, taking advantage of the dynamic resource allocation, incremental scaling, low-cost high availability / fail-over, and hardware flexibility inherent with the virtual deployment model. After a customer has successfully tested the Virtual Edition, there are two deployment options - move into production on virtual, or switch to traditional physical appliances. To make this process easy, Symantec is using the same licensing and SKUs across both form factors, so customers aren't locked into a decision, and can even deploy both (testing on virtual, production on physical, or varying based on geographic region, etc.).
The Symantec Mail Security 8300 is available in a variety of physical configurations. Configuration options are available on the Symantec site, or contact your Dell sales representative for more information.
