Overview

This article walks you through the process of replacing the keyboard on your Dell Latitude E6420. First, it identifies the steps that need to be taken before you begin, and the tools you need to replace the keyboard. Before you begin

 

  1. During installation or removal of any hardware, always ensure that all data is backed up properly.
  2. Disconnect any telephone, network, video, or USB cables from the computer.
  3. If the laptop is being used in a docking station, undock the system.
  4. Disconnect the AC adapter from the system.
  5. Remove the battery from the system.
  6. Hold the power button in for 5 seconds to drain any residual power from the system.

Removing and Installing your Keyboard

  1. Remove the keyboard trim by gently lifting the edges using the plastic scribe tool.
  2. Remove the two securing screws directly below the battery on the bottom of the system.
  3. Remove the four screws at the bottom of the keyboard above the touchpad.
  4. Gently flip the keyboard over.
  5. Lift the cable securing latch up with the plastic scribe tool.
  6. Gently disconnect the cable and remove the keyboard from the system.

 

Installing your keyboard

  1. Connect the keyboard cable.
  2. Press the cable securing clip down so that it is clipped into place.
  3. Flip the keyboard upright, and slide it downwards into place.
  4. Replace the four screws at the bottom of the keyboard.
  5. Replace the keyboard trim and press down until it snaps into place.
  6. Replace the two securing screws on the bottom of the system.
  7. You can now reinstall the battery and reconnect the AC adapter.
