ATI Catalyst Control Center Not Responding in Windows Server 2008 with AMD/ATI V7800P GPU
Article Summary: This article provides information on ATI Catalyst Control Center not responding in Windows Server 2008 with AMD/ATI V7800P GPU
ATI Catalyst Control Center™ (CCC) is factory installed on Dell PowerEdge™ systems running Windows Server 2008™ that contain one or more AMD™/ATI V7800P™ GPUs. It is also installed by default with the driver install application posted on support.dell.com. When the user logs into the operating system, CCC crashes and displays the message:
Catalyst Control Center: Host Application has stopped working
If the dialog box is closed and CCC is launched from the Start menu, the same error occurs.
The steps that follow for both of the following options are for Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. Other versions of Windows Server 2008 will be similar.
Option 1 (Dell Recommended)
Uninstall CCC. CCC is not required to realize the benefits of the GPU. To uninstall:
Go to Start > Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program.
From the list of installed programs, select 'ATI Catalyst Install Manager' and click 'Change'. The ATI Install Wizard will launch.
Click Next > Uninstall Manager > Next > Custom > Next.
Check the box next to 'Catalyst Control Center'. Do not check the box next to 'ATI Display Driver'. Click Next.
CCC is uninstalled. Click Finish > Finish.
The error message will no longer appear when logging in to the system. The ATI Driver will still be installed and functional.
Use the following workaround to enable CCC functionality.
Disable onboard video in BIOS Setup. Note: This will also disable video in the iDRAC Virtual Console. To do this, reboot the system and hit F2 when 'F2 = System Setup' appears in the upper right corner of the screen.
In the 'System Setup Main Menu' select System BIOS > Integrated Devices. Next to 'Embedded Video Controller' select 'Disabled'. Exit Setup and Select 'Yes' to save changes.
Connect a monitor to the Display Port of the GPU.
Log into Windows and install the Microsoft .NET framework (version 3.5 or later is required). Go to Server Manager > Features > Add Features > Under '.NET Framework 3.5.1 Features', select '.NET Framework 3.5.1' > Next > Install.
Note: A reboot may be required even if you are not prompted to do so.
Catalyst Control Center can now be successfully launched from the Start menu.
