This article provides information on "Imaging Recommendations for the Dell Latitude 7350".


The purpose of this document is to provide details for imaging Dell Latitude 7350 systems with the properly supported Microsoft Operating System and required drivers and applications.

Drivers and applications must be installed on the Latitude 7350 in a prescribed order to ensure optimal functionality and performance. Dell provides drivers and applications that are not included in Microsoft Operating Systems. These drivers are required to enable the features of the Dell Latitude 7350 systems. Supported Operating Systems

The following Microsoft operating systems have been validated for use with Dell Latitude 7350:

  • Windows 8.1 64 Bit (UEFI Mode)

OS Install

NOTE: Before beginning an image install, Dell first recommends that the system BIOS be updated to the latest version available and all BIOS settings are set correctly for the desired system operation. Also, drivers and supporting applications that are to be installed should be the latest available versions from

There are two basic methods to install an OS image on Latitude 7350.

  1. Manual installation from a UEFI bootable USB flash drive that contains the OS install files.
  2. Automated image install/deployment through Enterprise solutions such as Microsoft’s SCCM or WDT.

Manual installation through a USB flash drive

First, create a UEFI bootable USB flash drive that can boot and run the Windows 8.1 OS installer.

Run these steps from any local user workstation/system connected to the internet.

  1. Download or use an existing Windows 8.1 Install DVD ISO file.
  2. Download the "Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool".
  3. Place the USB key in one of the local system USB ports.
  4. Run the DVD tool as administrator.
  5. Select the Windows 8.1 installer ISO and click "Next".
  6. From the next screen that is provided, select "USB device".
  7. Choose the desired USB device from the drop down menu and click "Begin copying".
  8. Wait for the tool to complete the USB build and close it.
NOTE: If the desired boot mode is legacy, the USB flash drive can be used as created by the DVD Download tool, skip to step "13.". If the desired boot mode is UEFI, continue from step "9.")
  1. Create a folder on the local system. Example, "C:\Win8dot1-USB-Boot"
  2. Copy "ALL" the files and folders on the USB key to the folder on the local system
  3. Reformat the USB key as FAT32. (The DVD tool defaults to NTFS. UEFI must boot from FAT32 for the USB device.)
  4. After the format is complete, copy all the files and folders from the local folder back to the USB device
  5. The USB device will now boot to the OS installer and is ready to use to install the OS on the Latitude 7350.

To install the OS with a bootable USB flash drive:

  1. Insert the USB bootable flash drive into one of the Keyboard Base’s USB ports and power up the system.
  2. As soon as the Dell splash screen is displayed, press the F12 to bring up the one-time boot selection menu.
  3. For UEFI mode, use the arrow keys to highlight "USB NIC (IPV4)" or "USB NIC (IPv6)" and press Enter.

  1. For Legacy mode, use the arrow keys to highlight the "USB NIC" then press enter.

  1. After pressing enter, the system will then boot to the USB flash drive and start the OS installer. Follow the OS installer prompts to complete the OS install process.
  2. After the OS is installed, the device drivers and supporting application must be installed to provide full system functionality.
  3. The drivers and apps can be downloaded from and placed on a USB flash drive and then copied to a scratch or temporary folder on the system. After the driver files and apps have been copied to the system, they can be manually installed or installed by script(s).
  4. The recommended install order for device drivers and apps is outlined below in Section 6.

Installation through Microsoft’s System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM)

PXE Boot Setup

Latitude 7350 supports PXE network booting for connection to automated install and deployment servers. It is recommended to use the network capabilities of the docking unit to provide PXE boot and network support for the system. The PXE boot image provided by the PXE server must be a WinPE boot.wim that can boot in UEFI mode. In order for WinPE to connect to the network image server after startup, the boot wim image file must have the drivers installed for the Venue 11 Pro system’s network device. The Latitude 7350 can boot both standard PXE DOS (initrd) and UEFI images; dependent on BIOS boot mode and USB to Ethernet adapters.

Built into the BIOS, the Latitude 7350 have PXE code specifically for an USB to Ethernet adapter. In order to use an external USB to Ethernet adapter to PXE boot, the adapter must be built around the ASIX AX88772 Ethernet IC (Integrated Circuit), SMSC LAN7500 device or the Realtek RTL8153-VB.

The following manufacturer’s USB to Ethernet adapters have the correct Ethernet IC and are detected by the Latitude 7350 BIOS as PXE bootable devices.

  • HiRO USB2.0 To Ethernet LAN 10/100MBPS Network Adapter – Mfg. P/N H50223
  • Sabrent USB2.0 To Network 10/100MBPS Ethernet Adapter – Mfg. P/N NT-USB20
  • Dell L321X SMSC USB adapter – Mfg. P/N TFXX8

The below table outlines the USB to Ethernet devices and boot modes that are currently supported.

The ASIX AX88772 internal to the dock and the USB adapters is only capable of 10/100Mbit Ethernet speeds.

Enable the UEFI Network Stack:

  1. Before the 7350 system can PXE boot UEFI mode, the UEFI network stack must be enabled in BIOS.
  2. Enter BIOS setup
  3. Use the arrow keys and highlight "Advanced Boot Options"
  4. Click the check box "Enable UEFI Network Stack"
  5. Press the Apply button and exit BIOS setup.

Booting the system to PXE

To PXE boot the system, make the necessary USB and network connections then power up the system.

As soon as the Dell splash screen is displayed, press the F12 key to bring up the one-time boot selection menu.

Use the arrow keys to highlight "USB NIC(IPV4)" or "USB NIC(IPV6)" depending on network topology in use.

Press enter to boot the system to the network device.

NOTE: To skip having to press F12 and select the boot device every boot, the boot order in BIOS settings can be configured for the network device as the 1st boot device in the boot device list.

Device Drivers / Apps

Dell provides pre-packaged driver and app Cab files for OS deployment through SCCM or other deployment services. The Cab files can be downloaded from the Dell Support Site.

SCCM Partition Setup

While not required for Latitude 7350, it is recommended to create a Partition Disk 0 – BIOS partition to provide support for future models that can boot with legacy BIOS mode. For the legacy partitions _SMSTSBootUEFI should be set to "not equals" true.

If desired the BIOS legacy step can be skipped. Partition Disk 0-UEFI partition must be created. Here _SMSTSBootUEFI must be set to "equals" true in order for the partition to properly UEFI boot.
