Area-51 R5, SSD and RAM upgrade questions

Hey all. So I want to replace the stock 2tb HD that came with my system with an SSD and it seems like in the past some people have had issues adding one. So my 1st question is will it be possible to just replace the HDD with a SATA SSD? without any crazy problems?

If so, will a Samsung or SanDisk SATA SSD work fine or is there a specific one that I should use (or avoid) ?

Also curious about RAM. While not a big issue, I currently have 32GB of 2933 RAM and I was wondering if it's possible to buy 3200 RAM and actually get it to run at 3200 in the R5. For some reason I feel like I read in the past that the R5 may be limited to 2933 so I wanted to make sure. Thanks for any help.

Hello, i have an Alienware Area 51 R5.

Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-9980XE CPU @ 3.00GHz 3.00 GHz

Purchased 64 mb  HyperX Kit RAM DDR4 UDIMM RGB Gamer Predator 64GB 3200 MHz.

I went to the Bios and enable XMP profiles, but in profile No1 3200mhz when i save changes tries to boot but it doesnt. Black screen and it wont boot, i have to press the start button for 10 sec then wait a while as the systems try to boot and finally i can enter BIOS again but the changes are not saved. Before i knew that by pressing the start button for 10 sec the system could boot again i had to clear CMOS by pulling the batery out and pressing power button for another 10 sec.

I also tried profile No2 at 3000 mhz and the same problem it won boot after saving. Finally i have only been able to save it leaving it  XMP profile in "manuall" mode. But i have not tried changing clock speed manually in the BIOS , because i am afraid of messing something up, and that my PC wont boot again. This picturtes shows the PC working with the new Ram but only at stock speeds of 2400 mhz.

There is another tread open on this subject a lot of treads, but no solution, i have premium Support and the Dell Support has been giving me a runaround , asking me in private for information but it has been 3 weeks and nothing yet, today i received another email asking me if i was available to see this problem, they are just wasting my time and they dont give you a straight aswer on how you can get this memory working at 3200mhz. They keep asking for more days and they dont tell you anything is frustraiting.

I hope you get an answer on how to get this Ram working at 3200 mhz.

Regards.

Re: will it be possible to just replace the HDD with a SATA SSD? without any crazy problems? All you need is 3.5 to 2.5 adapter, the rest of swap is straightforward. If so, will a Samsung or SanDisk SATA SSD work fine or is there a specific one that I should use (or avoid) ? Both good, just pick one that fits your budget and need (capacity). Avoid used ssd. Samsung is a better brand but you may have to pay more for it.

Re: I was wondering if it's possible to buy 3200 RAM and actually get it to run at 3200 in the R5. R5 ram spec 2666 MHz up to 3200 MHz (XMP memory) Get crucial guaranteed to work https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/alienware/aurora-r5#memory Unfortunately their ballistix DDR4 PC4-25600 • 16-18-18 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR4-3200 • 1.35V • 2048Meg x 64 • is out of stock now.

Thank you for all your answers. I guess I don't need the adapter if I put the SSD in the SSD bay and keep the HDD installed for regular storage right?

Yes.

I made a mistake thinking it was Aurora R5.

crucial memory for A51 R5

No worries. I noticed the search was for an Aurora and changed it when I went there. I like that Ballistix 3200 RAM. I might get 2 sets of that and try to get 64GB of 3200 RAM running in this thing. Figure if I throw another SSD in here, upgrade the RAM to the fastest it supports, and then get a 3090/3080ti in 5 years when they are available and I should have this thing close to maxed out for another few years. I appreciate the help.

Hey one more question. Would it be better to go with the Crucial SSD over a Samsung or SanDisk since Crucial is specifically stating it is compatible with the Area-51 R5? Normally none of this is an issue but this is what we deal with when owning Alienware machines. So what do you think?

For sata SSD I would just pick up any good name brand that fits your budget and need (capacity). No need to stick with crucial ssd if there is one better deal.

OK. One more one more question. Am I better off getting 4x16GB or 2x32GB for RAM setup? I assume 4x16 but again this is Alienware so... you know.

If you plan to upgrade ram to 128gb in the future, then 2x32 (dual channel) gives you option to add 2x32 to upgrade to 4x32.  If 4x16 then in the future you need to buy 4x32.

if 4x16 and 2x32 price are similar then consider 2x32.
