Aurora-R7, RAM used 16GB HyperX DDR4 XMP 2933MHz

Can anyone give me a link to a website selling this? I'm buying one module with the system, and want to buy another one, separately. I can't find HyperX at 2933MHz for sale anywhere. What am I missing here? Thanks.

I was able to confirm with HyperX Support, after they released their "factory" HyperX 2933, that the Dell/Alienware branded HyperX 2933 has a different timing setup than their own HyperX.  They couldn't/wouldn't disclose the timing differences.  Alienware support had me set the "factory" HyperX to XMP 2 which downclocked to 2666MHz CL 16-18-18@1.2V, the correct XMP2 settings for HyperX 2933.  Any thoughts as to why the XMP 2.0 profile is a downclock??

However, after trying the 4 modules again the system immediately gave 4 flash led code at power on and began to continuously reboot.  Dell immediately sent out a new motherboard, but after it was replaced the exact same problems were encountered.

For anyone interested/looking I have a Dell OEM Kingston Fury HyperX 16GB 2933 module for sale. I ended up with 2 x Kingston brand and do see they run at 2933 (using Task manager) however, I am not able to access the XMP function when using OC Controls...

Try accessing XMP through the BIOS, it much works better.   I haven't even reinstalled the OC Controls.

I've been trawling the forum reading up about faster RAM for Aurora R7 and it looks to me that the following two types have been proven to work at 2933 MHz (the fastest I believe the motherboard can support).

Ripjaws V 3000 e.g. https://www.overclockers.co.uk/g.skill-ripjaws-v-16gb-2x8gb-ddr4-pc4-24000c15-3000mhz-dual-channel-kit-black-my-10w-gs.html

and hyperx fury e.g. https://www.hyperxgaming.com/us/memory/fury-ddr4?partnum=HX432C18FB2K2/16

note. fury 300 or 3200 MHz are more or less same price.

Is anyone using either of these without any issues?

As far as I know, attempting to run 3200 MHz RAM is still resulting in a "Bad RAM" error message and a no boot condition at power up.  Previous attempts with the Ripjaws V 3000 MHz resulted in a stable system, but running at 2933 MHz.  HyperX does not make a 3000 MHz Fury, they do 2933, 3200 and 3466.

The benchmark results between the 2666 MHz and the 2933 MHz were so miniscule as to be completely unnoticeable, and anything above 2933 MHx is irrelevant as the motherboard appears to be capped at 2933 MHz.  The 2933 MHz RAM appears to be nothing more than slightly overclocked 2666; if you check the XMP 2 settings, you'll see that the 2933 reverts to 2666 MHz.  I put 64 Gb of HyperX 2666 into my system when I found it on sale and have been perfectly happy.  RAM upgrades on the R7 are problematic and you will not see a noticeable difference between the 2666 and 2933 MHz modules.  Best advice, buy whichever is cheaper at the moment.  If you want noticeable, measureable, super performance from a RAM upgrade, buy a different motherboard.

I too have run into similar difficulties in trying to upgrade on the single 16gb DIMM of HyperX 2933 that shipped with my R8. Ive been in touch with dell and Kingston over this, neither helpful at all. Both parties confirm that oem will not work with retail, meaning the only way to upgrade WITHOUT ditching the oem memory is to buy from dell as Kingston cannot or will not sell it.

the upshot? - price from dell uk for ONE matching 16gb DIMM? - £358 gbp.

This is tant amount to highway robbery as nowhere was it pointed out that a simple upgrade would be so catastrophically difficult and expensive.

This is what Kingston emailed me last;

Dear Steve,

Thank you for your reply.

Based with all the information provided our engineers team do not guarantee our memory HyperX compatible with the original memory 16GB 2R*8 XMP4-2933-UB1-11.

The only option they recommend will be either to replace the existing one by the memory HyperX or get an upgrade from the manufacture system of Dell to have the exact memory part 16GB 2R*8 XMP4-2933-UB1-11

We apologise for any inconvenience caused

We remain available for any additional information

Best regards

Stephanie

That's "IF" Dell even has the RAM in stock.  Several people tried the longest to get the Dell OEM HyperX 2933 RAM, but it was never in stock.  Best bet is either put yours up for sale and buy the Kingston factory HyperX or see if anyone is wanting to sell theirs.  I ended up buying 64GB of brand new 2666MHz DDR4 CL16 HyperX Fury Black direct from Kingston for $445 USD,  £334 GBP.   And what's really interesting, in benchmarking tests, the far more expensive 2933 MHz RAM outperformed the 2666 MHz by a staggering 0.35%.    Yep, for more than four times the money, people are gaining that staggering  0.35% (NOT 35%, one third of ONE%) performance increase over the native 2666 MHz RAM.   Choice seemed pretty logical to me, Dell can keep their overpriced RAM.

It's been this way since at least the Aurora-R6 days:

At least now-days, the PDF manuals should be edited/fixed, and the Aurora sales pages should more accurately reflect what you are getting (as far as shipped DIMM counts and Dual-Channel operation).

The above is all fair and good, but it doesn’t exactly sit very well with Dell’s supposed sales approach of “user upgradability” does it?

Buy more ram later? - sure, as long as it’s from  us and we can then charge what we want because you can’t get the upgrade anywhere else!

To me, that is not the best way to play customers
