Aurora R8, 3200MHz HyperX compatible?

Would 2 hyperX fury ddr4 8gb ram modules with a speed of 3200 mhz be compatible with the Aurora R8 model?

May 11th, 2020 17:00

I believe you're somewhat wrong. As when I built my dell aurora pc it was from their website and an option was a hyperx fury ddr4 xmp 16gb and 32gb outputting at 2933. I believe hyperx fury is the only company it does xmp with. My question is though, is if that's possible, than would my hyperx fury ddr4 2x8gb ram with a speed of 3200 mhz work?

I have the HyperX Fury retail 2933 and it works at 2933 with XMP enabled as advertised with my aurora's z370 board. I know other people have had success with this RAM too.

Do note that the OEM Dell "HyperX Fury" sold with the Aurora is custom spec'ed for Dell, and the timings, etc., are different than the retail version of the HyperX Fury sold by HyperX on amazon, etc.  If you reach out to HyperX, and contact them directly, they will not guarantee compatibility with Dell for this reason.  Due to these differences, you cannot mix and match the OEM memory with the retail memory and expect good results, even though they are both called "HyperX Fury."

Officially the Aurora does support up to 3200.  I've seen some people are able to get 3200 on the R8 with retail RAM, but there's no guarantee.

If you get these from non Dell vendors chances are they will likely not run at spec freq but down clocked to as low as 2133.  Dell bios does not honor other vendor XMP profile.

Oh wow okay this really helps but one question now. It says it supports the configurations 16gb xmp at 3200mhz but not 8gb xmp at 3200mhz.. so would 2x8gb xmp at 3200mhz equaling 16gb still work?

See page 13 of Dell's manual:

Slots:  Four DIMM sockets
Type:  DDR4
Speed:  Up to HyperX FURY DDR4 XMP at 3200 MHz

The only reason I can think that it's written like that in the service manual would be that Dell doesn't sell it with 8gb xmp 3200 RAM sticks so it has not been validated in that configuration.

I think if you buy the OEM Dell ram directly from Dell either as a part of original factory configuration like or Dell spare part, those OEM ram will work at 3200 spec. But if you buy hyper X 3200 from another retail vendor, there is no guarantee. As a matter of fact we have often heard users report those non Dell HyperX do not perform at vendor advertised spec in Aurora.  Of course there is possible reporting bias, that those successful user do not come to the community to report as often as those unlucky ones.  Your question was whether 2x8 gb HyperX 3200 will work the same as 16 Gb 3200 mentioned in Dell manual spec. Answer is: if you are able to buy these from Dell for Aurora, they are guaranteed to work. If you buy elsewhere, no guarantee.

excerpt from one user report: “I actually did upgrade my RAM from dell's minimum and default HyperX XMP 16GB (2x8GB) 2666Mhz to 32GB (2x16GB) 3200Mhz of the same brand HyperX XMP. However, I did notice that after installing the new RAMs, the speed was just 2933Mhz... I bought it in amazon. If you read the amazon reviews, a couple people have stated it runs at 3200 on the R8.  I don't see why 8gb vs. 16gb vs 32gb sticks would make any difference.

Yeah, that guy had an R10 Ryzen, which has a different motherboard chipset.  I've noticed there have been more issues with upgrading RAM on the Ryzen B550A boards than with the z370 aurora boards.

I actually have the retail from amazon HyperX Fury on the z370 board with no issues.  I realize the aurora's are notoriously picky with RAM so nothing is guaranteed.

Okay. Makes since. So worst case scenario itll work but be down clocked to 2933mhz. Is that the worst that can happen?  Like no matter what if it works or not will it damage or hinder my pc in any way?

I'll just return them to Amazon. How do I return Smithng never done that. Also I'm try to buy a ram stick from here now just another 8gb to match my other already installed but theres a udimm and osdimm......which one is the right one..?

Worst case scenario you return it to amazon. It won't brick your PC by itself, but user error such as incorrect installation (failing to disconnect power) or electrostatic discharge could brick the pc.

Johndoe089,

Click my DELL-username and via Private Message send me your Aurora R8 service tag number. I will then see which memory shipped and get the Dell 5 digit part number.

Just chat with customer support they will tell you what you need and the price.  The R8 is sold with different RAM part numbers and you'd want one the same as in your current pc.

Amazon is easy, just click return under order history.
