Aurora R9, random freezes/lockups

Since I owned this PC I have had random freezes daily.  Any help or insight on this issue?

Wired USB keyboard locks up and mouse unresponsive for 5-10+ secs.

I have removed the raid and switched to AHCI mode (helped reduce the frequency of lock ups)

I performed a complete system repair on windows on multiple occasions

I keep all system updates, Bios and drivers updated. I keep all Windows 10 updates current.

I run diagnostics on a regular basis that state all is fine.

It is my current belief that the lockups are related to the 2TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD.

I know Dell states the standard generic W10 PCI NVMe driver is suitable. If that is the case, then why does Samsung custom driver for all their PCI NVMe SSDs? except the ones provided to OEMs with no support?

I have used download accelerator and every time the download was complete and it would reassemble the file the system would freeze, lockup for 5-10 secs. I have since removed the software and still experience inter mitten freezes during the day.

My current configurations is:

All OC settings are conservative and using the standard factory settings.

Alienware Aurora R9
Windows 10 Pro (64bit) English
Killer(TM) Wi-Fi 6 AX1650 (2x2 ) 802.11ax Wireless and Blueto oth 5.1
NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) RTX 2070 SUPER(TM) 8GB GDDR6 (OC Ready)
2TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD
16GB Dual Channel HyperX(FM) F URY DDR4 XMP at 2933MHz
9th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 9 700K (8-Core, 12MB Cache, Over clocked up to 4.6GHz across al l cores)

Thanks!

Ill give that a try. I have a few SSDs I can use.

If you suspect it is due to the SSD, maybe buy a $50-ish SSD to try it out? Or have Dell tech support help?

Have you discovered what the problem is? I just received my new R9 last week and am experiencing the exact same issue and have attempted all the fixes you did as well. I see no problem with Windows itself and also have come to the belief that there is possibly something wrong with the SSD.

This freeze and crash happens almost every day now and is becoming infuriating. Every other day, my computer will also not connect to the monitor on startup and I have to manually shut it down/restart in order for it to do so, which usually brings about another freeze after a few minutes. I cannot find any useful assistance on this, and leaped when I found this thread since I thought I was alone with this issue.

Current Configuration:
Alienware Aurora R9 Dark Side of the Moon chassis with High-Performance CPU Liquid Cooling and 850W Power Supply

NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) RTX 2080 SUPER(TM) 8GB GDDR6 (OC Ready)
9th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9 9900 (8-Core, 16MB Cache, up to 5GHz with Intel(R) Turbo Boost Technology)
Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX1650 (2x2) and Bluetooth 5.0
1TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD (Boot) + 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s (Storage)
32GB Dual Channel HyperX(FM) FURY DDR4 XMP at 2933MHz

@HistoryTeacher @Lightlord001 :

There is a log utility within Win10 that you can pull up to see if there's any user/ system software related errors/ problems that could be halting the computer intermittently sometimes.

Not sure what it's called. Probably need @speedstep @Tesla1856 @r72019 to help with this.

No success so far.  I havent had time yet to clone to a Sata SSD to see if the problem perisist.

I have been keeping an informal log on time date and durations when the freezes happen and compairing the times to any events in windows systems logs. No shows in the logs during those time periods.

Ill keep you informed on any new insights.

Something simple I am going to try, just to see if it makes any bit of difference, is disabling Fast Startup. I had issues out of the box with my R5 with that turned on as well, and even though it was not the exact same problem, it made the PC far more reliable after that point.

I will keep you posted as well.

After running through the Event Viewer, I found a few "Critical" Errors. One of them was a Fast Startup Issue as I had previously guessed from past experience. The others do not say much beyond the system shut down, which is happening whenever it freezes.

To access Event Viewer select the keyboard shortcut Win+R, type eventvwr.msc and press the ENTER key.

To view the system log

  1. Open Event Viewer.
  2. In the console tree, expand Windows Logs, and then click System. The results pane lists individual  events.
  3. If you want to see more details about a specific event, in the results pane, click the event.

Security logs should also be looked at because malware can cause crashes/restarts as well due to driver corruption.

The display driver is especially important to Fast Startup since it's based on Hibernate.

The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Windows failed fast startup with error status 0xC00000D4

The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first.

check whether event ID 45 is logged in the System log.

Event 45: The system could not sucessfully load the crash dump driver.

If you see this event, verify the contents under the DumpFilters registry value:

  1. Open the Run box.

  2. Type regedit, and then press Enter.
  3. Locate and click the following registry entry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl\

  4. From the pane on the right, verify the contents under the DumpFilters registry value.
  5. Remove everything and make sure that "dumpfve.sys" is the only value listed.
  6. Exit Registry editor.
  7. Restart the computer to enable Fast Startup.

did you ever find a solution to this? im about ready to throw my r9 out the window

March 5th, 2021 19:00

I never found a solution, no. My computer stopped doing it after a few months but once in a while it does happen again (one time last week for instance).

I have no clue what could be causing it and I really hope I never have the issue to the same degree again. It was an infuriating problem with no adequate technical support provided by anyone at Dell. I am hoping it was at least partially fixed by recent Windows updates since I have no clue what else could have mainly stopped it from happening.

March 5th, 2021 23:00

I have the Samsung NVMe installed.  There is also driver support for other manufactorer versions now.

Lightlord001_1-1615016740970.pngLightlord001_0-1615016658708.png

I will evetually replace this NVMe with a standard retail version.  The performance characteristics are below par.

I cloned my NVMe to the Samsung EVO with the free migration software. When I tested the Samsung EVO SATA over a 30 day period. I had zero issues.  So my problem is was directly related to the Generic Samsung NVMe made for Dell.

My solution was software.  My guess it was Intel Rapid Storage Application or driver.  Or the Intel Optane software/drivers, which are no longer a download for my rig.   I would uninstall all of those related. Then see if that fixes the problem on freezes.  See If that fixes the issue.  I would then add one at a time and test, using the Alienware Updater designate which to use.  Since it appears to bypass the culprit now.

well thats unfortunate
this is really getting on my nerves
