X51 R2, video card, power supply upgrades?

Jump to solution

Hello everyone,

I am hoping someone can help me with this. I would like to upgrade my video card and my power supply if need be. I have the following PC.

Dell Alienware X51 R2

Windows 7 Premium

4th Generation Intel Core i5-4460 Processor Quad Core 6MB Cache up to 3.4GHz w/Turbo Boost

Nvidia Geforce GTX 745

240 Watt Power Supply

What is the best video card I can upgrade to with the power supply I currently have?

What would be the best power supply I could upgrade to and then what would be the best video card I could upgrade to with the better power supply?

Thank you very much.

Answering the second question first...The following will help.

As for the first question this should help but a 1050 or 1050Ti should work.

Current power supply does not allow for any upgrade that would be supported.

OEM 8CCF1 Nvidia GeForce GT 1030 would work.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B07XD5QS85

330W power brick is not too expensive. (0XM3C3,XM3C3,DA330PM111,0Y90RR,Y90RR,F0K0N,331-2429,450-17280,ADP-330AB B,5X3NX,F0K0N,332-1432,ADP-330AB)

With an actual R2 (D85RT power board) https://www.ebay.com/c/1147231406

you can upgrade up to a GTX 1060 once you get 330W power brick.

Thank you very much. I have been researching the 1050TI. I am thinking of going with that card after I upgrade my power supply. I watched a video of one guy installing a 1060 in the same PC I have except it was an Intel i3 and it was over heating and he had a problem with size because it was to long. He got it in but again had overheating issues. I think the 1050TI takes less power and is a smaller card. At least the card I was looking at on Amazon.

300W is minimum power supply for 1050 or 1050ti per nvidia.

Thanks for the input speedstep. My answer actually contradicted a post I made some months ago. I am going to have to research a bit better and quit doing it while watching football...😉
