ASUS Rampage IV Black Edition Motherboard in an Alienware Area 51 case

I'm using an Alienware Area 51 case to temporarily install my new system. Are the front panel connections compatible with the ASUS Rampage IV Black Edition Motherboard? I have no idea where to connect a power button to the motherboard do get the system to turn on. Thanks for any help everyone.

Let's pretend this is a basic Alienware case, trying to integrate with an Asus mthrbrd. I would note the use of a basic black 5x5 USB-type connector, where 8-wires are used, 2 slots are open.

You've been getting photos & links to posts which show the Asus boards use what amounts to a pair of 5x5's, or, a solid 10x10, mimicked by the Q-connector. Q-connect & Asus mthrbrd will have the text printed. If your front panel wires are currently inside of a 5x5 usb-type connector, like photo above, you must identify the reset/pwr sw/pwr led/hdd led wires:

  • reset & pwr sw wire pairs are not polarized +/-
  • hdd led/pwr on led are polarized +/-, you have to get the +/- leads in the correct slots

I'm not sure how to state this other than, Sir, rewire your front panel according to the scheme below, using your connectors of choice, 2pin (as shown) or a pair of 5x5 usb-types, or a solid 10x102072.Capture.JPG

use this post for reference: Area 51 ALX Restoration (it will describe the front panel). Once you've ID'd your wires, some people go this route, transferring new connectors onto the wires/pins:

For Asus, if it uses a spaced 10 x10 front panel header, I have a section in my post here describing the front panel, listed under:

The last idea is to snag another 5x5 usb-type connector & wire your front panel up using the 5x5 you have now & a spare, then sit them side-by-side (to make a 10x10).

MSI boards however use a simple 5x5,like stock. Asus tends to use 10x10'S, like their Q-connect. Note that your pci-e shroud may not shut all the way when using the q-connect. I hope this will suffice.

to put it simply, your front panel wiring right now is set up for an MSI board, it will not be suitable for your Asus, the wires have to come out of your 5x5 connector, & you game plan from there. Lift the plastic locking tab up with a needle to back a pin out of a 5x5:

My wires from the Alienware case are different. There's an 8 wire harness for POWER LED (2 wires - black and green); RESET SW (2 wires - white and black); HDD LED (2 wires - red and black) and SPEAKER (2 wires - red and black in a 4 pin connector) .

And a separate 2 wire POWER SW (black and green);

I got the case off of ebay and not even sure what Area 51 type it is.

Thanks for the help so far.

Browse the bottom of this thread ... My Project: The Area-51 AlienMaster

You might have to post into that thread, ask your question there, since he might have the same case & basic wiring as you. The gist if it is, your old motherboard has micro-text & so does your new motherboard (it may have a manual too). You 1st identify the wire types / colors / assignments relative to your old board, then, if need be, rewire your front panel connector(s) so they match up with new board, got it? Buy any new connectors you might need, or, if your old front panel connector(s) will work (or any spares that may work in your spare parts bin) then back the pins out & plug them in to their new positions. Sound about right?

Use of the Asus q-connector is optional, but for now, if you have a pwr switch inside its own 2pin connector, you find the microtext on new mthrbrd (or q-connect) which says pwr sw, plug it in.

If you have an 8-wire harness, it sounds like you might back your pins out & push them into a new little set of assorted 1p/2p connex like Klengen is using. You have to be mindful that an LED light is polarized, it has a (+) & a (-) lead, so when you say: 'POWER LED (2 wires - black and green); ... it is possible the black lead is (-) but you will know that once you read the micro-text off of your old mthrbrd. If the black lead is (-) then it must be coupled to the (-) lead on the new board dedicated for pwr led duty

Thanks everyone. Now I can't get out of F1 set up. Every time the system boots up there's a CPU fan error. Also, does it matter which SATA plug/order on the Black Edition mobo the  SSD, HDD and optical drive plug into? As the SSD will be the boot drive.
