After closing lid on M14x. Condensation appears on the screen.

Jump to solution

This might be a silly question but I just can't wrap my head around it and I'm not sure where its coming from.  Every time the Alienware laptop runs a couple of hours, I close the screen lid to put it on the floor. A few hours later when I want to use the laptop again, I open the lid up and wet/moisture streaks are across the screen in a vertical pattern. Not all over, but mostly on the left side of the screen around the E, D, F, R, T, G, C, V, buttons.

Whats going on here? I'm pretty sure this isn't normal and I am not sure what it could be due to. Average home temperature is around 22 degrees Celsius and the laptop does not run excessively hot, its brand new.

Should I be returning this? or what? I dont wanna come to use it one day and it wont turn on.

Turn off the porn? Just kiddin but it has to be the hot laptop and the cold air = condensation, right? Don't put it on the floor which will be colder then the rest of the room. Make sure there are no vents blowing on it, like from the left side where you see the condensation. Really nothing else that could do it.

I have some similar marks on mine, but they are not condensation for me, they appear to be moisture/oil/sweat from my fingers , I realised this after I had to use the number pad extensively and got the markings on that side.

Maybe the same thing ?

I took a swab of what was on my screen because I wasn't really sure on what it was. It didn't leave streak marks as when you clean moisture. I had a lab technician at where I work, analyze it. Turns out you were right, it seems to be a mixture of oil and sweat. I suppose the heat from the laptop evaporates some of the sweat/moisture from the surface of the keyboard/mousepad. With it, goblets of oil attach as it evaporates  and attach themselves to the screen. Makes sence since the screen itself wont dry up, because of the oil.

I've never had a laptop that did this, I'm really not liking the soft-rubber the new Alienware laptops have. Oil seems to adhere to it much easier

I have a nanosilver keyboad protector over my keyboard because my home office gets VERY dusty, so i keep it covered.

I think its just the extreme heat the machine generates which continues to dissipate after the lid is closed. Maybe worth picking up one of them moisture sheets for when you close the lid or let it cool before closing ?

I've never had a laptop get so hot as this, hence my reasoning, its good to know exactly what it is tho Smiley Happy
