Alienware 51 R2-Replacing broken GPU

Jump to solution

I would like some advice on which GPU to get as a replacement for "NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 760 TI WITH 2G GDDR5" on the alienware X51 R2. The parts section of the dell site suggests only one card which is Geforce GTX 750. I did not find the original card on the nvidia site for sale, I did however find the geforce GTX 760 (no TI). Would it be possible to upgrade to a better card than the one I already had, with the 330W power supply. Are other cards compatible?

Thank you for your help.

The GTX 760 ti is a rebranded GTX 670, so you can either get the GTX 670 or upgrade to a GTX 960.

That's weaker than all three other GPUs mentioned.

If you don't mind this follow-up question. Are all Gtx 960 cards similar enough to work with the alienware x51 r2. What should I look for in differences in these two for example:

GTX 960 GAMING 2G VGA MSI PCIe NVD GTX 960 GAMING 2G

GTX 960 GAMING 100ME VGA MSI PCIe NVD GTX 960 GAMING 100ME

These also look a lot different from the care that was in my machine as well as from this one that i found suggested to someone else:

The 960 from the newegg link will work best in the X51 because it will at least be cool. The other 960s have a cooler design that will, ironically, heat them up.

If I were you for a $70 more I will get the PNY XLR8 GTX 970  reference card that will play nicely with your system. 760 ti beats the 960 in performance its only advantage is power consumption and maybe runs more quiet than the 760ti. I have the same card on my x51 when I upgraded my rig to 970 and I could'nt be more happier with the performance. Noise level went down compare to 760 ti I have been running 970 for 3 mos. with no issues. My only point of view is if your going to upgrade with the same vram might as well keep the one you have you will get the same result. Now if you have a 2 or 3 yrs old card with 2gb vram as 960 I would say yes. Thats why your upgrading to a higher or better performance. This is only my 2 cents dont take it personally. I am just saying this base on my experience with 970....

Thank you so much for your reply.

Could I ask you for a link of a 970 that you have purchased? Was it also the cooler design like mentioned above.

Edit: The prices I'm looking at show 230 euros versus 370-390 euros. Maybe a little too much for me at the moment. (Alternate.be)
