Alienware Aurora, I'm having an odd network connection issue

Hello All

I have been discussing this over in the networking forum and they have been very helpful over there even though we can't seem to figure this out.  I thought I'd post something here to see if there is an Aurura specific issue going on I'm not aware of.

I have an Alienware Aurora, Win 7 home premium x64 and the broadcom 57xx network adapter.  I recently purchased a Netgear wndr3400 router and my Aurora will not recognize it.  According to device manager everything works, router and cables work (i can use it with my other computer), Aurora connects direct to modem without issue.  When I try to connect to router however I get ethernet cable not detected message.  I have tried with Mcaffee disabled and fully uninstalled, I did a full factory revert of the hd and os using datasafe and I've tried every Broadcom driver I can find, nothing helps.

Is it possible there is a problem with the Broadcom even though it connects to modem and device manager doesnt report a problem?

If anyone is running a similar rig and can connect to a router via ethernet cable, which Broadcom driver are you running?

I know this is an integrated adapter but I have never taken the computer apart.  I watched the teardown vid's but couldn't tell if the adapter was part of the motherboard or just attached to it?  I'm thinking of just replacing the Broadcom but don't want to tear down the computer only to find I need to replace the whole motherboard to do it.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I have a new r3, And I am networked to another computer in the hose[wired]. I have no problem,so let me explain how mine is hooked up. I have Roadrunner [time warner] my modem is a Motorola Surfboard, I have the cable line hooked to modem, then network line hooked to router, then network line from router hooked to computer[R3]. I ran the netgear install disc ,followed instructions. It will take you to wireless install which I did even though I was turning off the wireless.I'm not sure how your broadcom network adapter fits into all this.I hooked directly into the back of the computer were the network plug is located.I hope this helps.

Look closely at the cable. Should be Cat-5e or Cat-6 if trying to connect at 1000. If only Cat-5, you might have to limit connection to 100 (with options on driver Properties). Are the little lights comming on at both ends?

Be sure the router is giving out IP addresses from DHCP range. Aurora should be on Auto IP (will grab the next one). You can run:

IPCONFIG
IPCONFIG /release
IPCONFIG /renew

The circuit in on the MB (nothing to see inside).

You can try un-installing the Dell driver (and Broadcom Suite) and load the Broadcom driver from Microsoft instead.

Are you connecting the modem with the same cable that doesn't light the lights (little light on port and light on router port)?

If the modem works, that should mean everything on the computer is fine (hardware and driver).

Sounds like a problem with the router or cable.

I'm not sure what the cat # on the cable is, I'll have to check..  The lights do not come on when I attach the cable to the router, but they come on and everything works wonderfully when I connect direct to the modem.

I have done the ipconfig release/renew, problem is I can't do it when attached to the router because the computer doesnt recognize there is an ethernet cable connected and doesnt recognize anything to release and/or renew.

I have tried a bunch of drivers so far including the ones here from Dell, none seem to make a difference, currently at 14.6.1.0 which was relased 02/11 and I pulled down off Broadcoms site.

They suggested running a Winsock fix over in the Networking forum, I'm going to try that now see if it helps.

Just ran the Winsock and Winsock2 fixes, they didn't fix it.

I checked the cable it's a cat 6 and I use the same cable to connect to router or modem.

The router works, it hooks up to my other computer without issue.

Like I said, it's an odd problem, I can't figure out what it could be at this point. Everything works, they just don't want to work together.
