Alienware Aurora R1 With Installed Memory RAM): 24.0 GB memory (16.0 GB usable)
I have 6 sticks of Crucial 4GB DDR3l - 1600 UDIMM 1.35v CL 11 installed on a Alienware Aurora R1. The BIOS reports 16GB installed and Windows reports "Installed Memory (RAM): 24.0 GB memory (16.0 GB usable)" in the Computer Properties. I am running Windows 7 Enterprise with the latest BIOS update available for this machine (A11 10/28/2009). Do I have to change a BIOS setting for the PC to fully recognize the memory installed for Windows? I am using the Load Optimal BIOS defaults currently.

Yes, BIOS should show correct memory (to have any chance of it working/showing properly in Windows).
Check Aurora-R1 Service Manual.
Slots 1 - 6 (all slots filled)
1333 MHz (or 1066 MHz) DDR3
Try forcing it slower. Try 1333 first.
From my notes:
An Aurora R1 (with i7-9xx processor and x58 chipset) supports Tri-Channel memory if done right. It will hold 2 banks of 3 DIMMs = 6 DIMMs total. Yes, they ALL should match VERY closely. On top of that, each bank (set of 3) must be COMPLETELY IDENTICAL. Memory should be purchased and installed in sets of 3.
Use CPU-ID CPUz and physically inspect.
1066 MHz and I333 MHz DDR3
Slots 1, 3, and 5 or slots 1 — 6

I powered down the computer, and re-seated all the memory chips, one by one. After powering on, I held the F2 key down to access the BIOS. The correct memory showed up.
Thanks for all the help.

It always nice when the "Reseat the DIMMs" repair works. [:)]
I think that means that (just one) of the many minor address contacts is not making good contact.
Good work. Yet another Aurora-R4 is still in the field.
