Alienware M14x Screen Issues

Something rather troubling has started to occur in the last couple weeks regarding my laptop. I bought it about a month and a half ago from a good friend of mine (he's a computer engineer, took great care of it) and just recently I've noticed something strange happening with the screen. It seems that whenever it's not open to a certain position or something along those lines, lines start running up and down the screen. Within the last couple of days it's progressed to the point where whole parts of the screen go out, become foggy, have distorted/pixelated lines running through it and the screen becomes unresponsive until wiggled around and put into the right position. There's also an unidentified USB device that keeps popping up in the notifications although I do not have anything in the USB ports. I'm not sure if these issues are related, but I do not know how to solve either. Any feedback would be appreciated.
