Alienware M17X R4 - GPU Upgrade Problem
Hello There
Thanks for the support page!
Ok, I have a M17X R4 with AMD 7970M GPU. The card does not work anymore and I got a GTX680M GPU and installed it. Now I have a problem. The screen turns on but nothing happens! What can this be ??? Please help if you can

Hi boteswillie,
Are you able to see Alienware logo when you power on the system?
If yes, you may Press F12 button on keyboard during startup and run diagnostics to identify any hardware issues with the system.
If you do not see the logo, please share the status of power button light.
Also, share if you receive any beep codes when you power the system on.

Hello Sir
thank you for taking the time to get back to me. Ok here is some more info
Before I installed the 680 I operated the laptop without a dedicated gpu (just the intel hd4000). it was working just fine. after I installed the 680m I got 7 beeps. I then removed the 680m card and started the laptop up but the screen was dead (on but showing nothing). I heard the windows logon sound so that's weird. I then put back the 680 and now the screen comes on but yet again displays nothing. The power button flickers a few times and then it stops
Thanks for you assistance

Hi Boteswillie,
The 7 beep code means a CPU failure as mentioned in this article. It would be a good idea to re-seat the video card and the CPU as well. If the behavior continues, checkout this article and let us know.

Hi Boteswillie,
Just re-seat the CMOS battery and make sure it's properly seated on its base. If that doesn't work, try this article's troubleshooting steps.

Hi Boteswillie,
Last thing, can you remove the video card you just installed and tell me if the computer boots up normally?

Hi Again
Ok it worked fine until I installed the new 680. I have tried all of this with and without the card. That's what I cannot understand
