Alienware M17x 460m Graphic Drivers

Hello Chris,

This is a tender subject since Dell locks down its GPU's keeping us Alienware users from using the latest nVidia (or AMD) reference drivers.

I was lucky enough to be chosen to play the Battlefield 3 alpha this past week from EA.  I kept getting an error that nVidia drivers 270.39 or higher were required due to know issues with earlier GPU drivers.

Of course the "old" Dell Alienware drivers for the 460m in the 17x R3 are from April and in the 260's version.  Even the just released 580m gpu drivers from Dell are 269.xx.  Why can't Dell either allow us to use nVidia reference drivers or update its own drivers more promptly?

This is a reoccuring issue that dozens if not hundreds of Alienware/Dell customers constantly post here and many other forums.

Please advise.

We get drivers from AMD/Nvidia. We validate them. Microsoft WHQLs them. We release them. It takes a long time.

Thank you for replying Chris.  What exactly goes into "validation" beyond testing them with Dell specific components?  Does Dell modify the drivers further for any reason?
