RE: Alienware X51 CD Drive issues

Sounds more. Like a defective drive mine is only vertical and I play and burn DVD no problems   If warranty is still valid call up support but if you want a quick temp fix  pop off the side panel and just unplug the cables for now to stop the noise or remove the drive ...

Sorry I can't help with actually removing the cd , never had to do it on this type of drive

RE: Alienware X51 CD Drive issues

It personally doesn't make sense why a slot driven ODD would care about being vertical or horizontal, but

The eject button on my R2 is software driven, and the button doesn't do jack without the specific download from Dell drivers. (not then part of the windows core drivers, but specialty stuff).

Since there's not much detail here, I'll assume you meant this as well, but let's just start with the basics anyway...

1) try inside of Windows Explorer to eject the drive. (Right click on the drive letter and look for "eject" 3/4 way down for Win7+).

2)If the hardware button & software both don't work, then you'll have to open the case.

89FordProbe is likely right, so just slide off the top panel (1 screw in the top center of the back of the machine) and slide it forward (yes, towards the ODD side of the machine), then up. (as it lays flat on the ground)

3)There's 1 screw on that front edge that holds the cage for the ODD.

4)This is a laptop style ODD, you should see a tiny hole on the left 1/3 of the front you can use a paperclip in.

Then, if you're willing, pop in a second CD to see if the machine rejects this as well, or just go to your favorite store and get another assuming no warranty.

Again, ODD must be slot loading. (you might just be safer googling the DP/N on the label for replacement parts...

@89FordProbeeI've never seen clear pics of the internals of a K series R3. I'm assuming you have the liquid cooling yes? If so, is there really no room for an ODD mod? Near as I can tell, the chassis stil has the slot cut out right, so it'd really just need a donor front plastic piece?

TIA!

RE: Alienware X51 CD Drive issues

mine didn't have the k series from the  get go   its something I installed after the fact when I installed the 1070  and  the 32 gig ram from 8 ...  the 6700k has a 4ghz stock vs the 3.4 the non k had so.. was an improvement before I attempt overclock but to   be honest its overkill haha  but no cooling issues yet and been a few months..

so I still have my  cd drive  intact .... for   now .. haha

RE: Alienware X51 CD Drive issues

Haha, nice upgrade.

I've been really debating the X51 R3 w/ upgrades vs the Aurora R5.

Both can handle 6700k & GTX1080 (although admittedly that's pushing things a lot in the R3)

However an ODD is still necessary.

Glad to hear about your temps though. I have no idea how effective the liquid cooler is, being that small, but thinking that dell wouldn't spend more money if they didn't have to, I thought it was relatively necessary.

Good info, thanks!

I thought I already noted this but the DVD was inserted upside down
