Alienware area 51 R2 gigabyte GTX 980 TI G1
Helo everyone
Ive been wanting to change my GPU from a GTX 970 SLI to a GIGABYT GTX 980 TI G1 SLI. Now ive been hearing rumours about the area 51 R2's motherboard not being compatible or something? Im no expert in this so if anyone could give me some advice on if this is fixed or not i would be very grateful.
My specs atm are:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-5930K (6-cores, 15MB Cache, Overclocked up to 3.9 GHz w/ Turbo Boost)
Alienware Area 51 1500W Chassis
32GB Quad Channel DDR4 at 2133MHz
256GB SSD 6Gb/s Main + 4TB 6kRPM SATA 6Gb/s Storage
Dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 graphics with 8GB total (2x 4GB) GDDR5 - NVIDIA SLI Enabled
PS ive bought my alienware before alienware standard selling the area 51 with gtx 980 TI SLI

Hi,
I just discussed this with our LV3 tech support department and they advised there shouldn't be any issues with this configuration on the Alienware Area 51 R2. Let us know if you encounter issues.

If you buy the original NVIDIA Geforce GTX 980ti from NVIDIA.com store, it will work no problem in SLI with your Alienware.
My Alienware Area 51 R2 (Late 2014) run completely fine with the NVIDIA Geforce GTX Titan X in SLI: http://en.community.dell.com/owners-club/alienware/f/3746/t/19646546

Yes, as long is the OEM Nvidia of Geforce GTX 980Ti it will works when you install the video card in your Alienware Area 51 R2 (Late 2014).
When you do a search on the GeForce.com to buy one, you will have to scroll down until you see this:
Or you can go directly to this link: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/geforce-gtx-980-ti/buy-gpu and you should see these pictures of the original Nvidia Geforce GTX 980Ti box.
How your 4k monitor will handle this? It depends on what you do. I don't play any games but I use these two Titan X with my 4k monitor for contents creation under Windows 8.1 Pro. It runs correctly and it's stable.
As long your softwares are optimized for your video card and your 4k monitor your should be good.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980Ti, 6GB is a validated graphics card upgrade option for the Alienware Area 51 R2 system.

Yes i know, but i heard something about dual GTX 980 TI might give some trouble with the motherboard?

We have not been notified about anything like that, neither have I seen any threads in regards to this.

I've made contact with dell - the L3 engineers tested Titan x sli on the original motherboard - some cards worked, some didn't (even though they worked individually).
They don't know anything about a revised board.
They will be testing the 980ti in sli soon. So let's see.
Alienware Area 51 R2 with GTX Titan x SLI ......well when the replacement cards arrive :)

Thanks both of you already for the responds, helped me quite a bit. The only problem is that i can't buy any nvidea products in Belgium (which is where im from). So i might have to contact dell and ask them to order it for me. Is there some kind of garanty i will have when they would order nvidea cards for me and if they wouldn't work?

I suppose they do have some sort of warranty but please contact the Dell Sales department in your region so they can confirm this for you.

I just saw your reply regarding the GTX 980ti. So based on what I've read, this card from the Nvidia Store will work on our Area 51 R2 models, correct? I have a 4K monitor and would like to see how it will handle this card. Is there any modifications required or did it just drop in?
