Alienware18 R2 Upgrade question
So I know that I can upgrade this up to an 980M which is awesome but those are expensive and I don't have that kinda money but I'm happy that i can upgrade graphics cards on this laptop so it can future proof it. Anyway, What Do i have to have to upgrade it. It seem a lot of the cards on ebay have like thermal paste and all these extra parts. Do I need to get a new heat sink for each graphics card...ETC so what exactly would I need to upgrade my graphics card?
Thanks

To answer your questions.
You said 18 R2, but no such laptop exists. There's the m18xR2 (2012 laptop) and the 18 (2013-2015 laptop). If the latter, the upgrade process is a simple plug-and-play. If for the former, then you'll need a Clevo vBIOS.
There's also the GTX 970m, which is both cheaper and powerful (more powerful than the GTX 780m and GTX 880m). That would be a good option.
Note: the linked thread is old, before the 18 was recently refreshed with GTX 970m and GTX 980m GPUs.

So wait are you suggesting this is not a good idea even though it can be done?

Hi,
So I understand you have the Alienware M18X R2. We did not validate the NVidia 980M with this system. Therefore, we cannot confirm if the card will fit and work properly with this system.
Below you'll find the Dell Certified video card upgrades for this model (for dual and single configurations):

He's saying he has the Alienware 18, not the m18xR2.
