Aurora R4: GTX 590 ... is SLI possible?
Is this system capable of using the GTX 590, with two cards with SLI?
The power supply is listed as 875W, and I don't know if that's sufficient for two cards.
Dell does not offer two 590 in SLI for a new purchase.
No power supply upgrade options are available for a new purchase.

The list of power supplies certified for use with a Quad SLI GTX 590 configuration is as follows:

Dell's power supply may be more robust than a 3rd party PSU, but 875W still seems "iffy" for usability.

Oh....I forgot to mention the heat problem you will have in the R4. 590's are dual GPU cards and produce a lot of heat. Honestly, just one will keep you gaming for years.

Like C_ronic said. The 875W PSU will not work on dual 590's. The area 51- 1.1 or 1.2KW would work if you can figure out a way to get into the case.

If anything its been proven to be LESS robust than a third party PSU. I would say no it wont work. Try a PSU booster maybe, like the one you found.

Yea dawg is right. Even if you do find a way the Auroras layout is terrible for 2 cards. They have almost zero space inbetween them. For lower end cards you might get away with it. Pretty sure with two 590s the heat will be too great.

I don't have desktop background experience with Alienware, so looking at the store right now, I don't see an "Area51" as a model option. Only the Aurora is available, both the low and high end Aurora models have the 875W PSU only.

So is Dell making the elite Alienware brand merely average, with no top-end dual-590 performance model? Or is this just a brief transition phase while a dual-590 model is coming out?

Good question. The new R4 had the X79 chipset and is ready for PCI 3.0. The Area 51 has dropped off the grid for now. If your looking for the higher PSU in an Alienware, you should check out the DELL outlet site. I saw about 7 Area-51's there last night. One had dual 480's and an extreme processor. I bought my R3 from there and it is great, not to mentin the money you'll save. I have no idea if they will bring back the Area-51 but it was a beast!
Like C-ronic said, the R3 or R4 case is awesome, but way to small for dual cards. They litlerally sit on top of one another.

Javik the Area 51 should be back soon. I think they are trying to get the newer boards in them. If you have the money and want the BEST go look at Origin PC. I really regret buying my Alienware after having to deal with tech support here at Dell.

I guess it is a good refurb price at $3199 for dual 590, though I'm thinking along the lines of "get one 590 now, and in a couple years buy the other card at 1/5th to 1/10th the cost of when it was new". Thanks, I will keep watching the outlet. :-)

Dell Outlet machines often have odd spec choices. I don't understand people who build out super-high-end rigs, and then only get 300 gig drives. Um, what?
My Steam games collection alone eats a good 150 gig. Add in EQ2 and WoW and and... where'd my disk space go???
(I retrofitted my now 6.5 year old Dell XPS M170 laptop to have a 300 gig drive, the biggest PATA there ever was. My new desktop should be better equipped than that I think. Heh.)

Bummer, the one I was trying to link was only about $1800. I think it had 2TB hard drives. If the link is bad, might have sold.

Actually , because I just called alienware support, told me I would need to buy a 1.1 power supply and I will be good on installing the two gtx 590's. And WILL NOT have any heating problems due to Aurora's r4 advanced chasis.

Well I don't know what you guys did, but I just got my Aurora r4 and have gtx 590 working SLI, also installed the new 1. 1 power supply. No heating problems and perfectly working.

. They will tell you anything. The PSU will work but the heat will kill you. Good luck with that.

BTW many people had heating issues OUT OF THE BOX with dual card auroras. These cards arent even as hot or as big as 590s. The design for the Aurora just doesnt suit two cards well. You think they are going to admit that?
